It wouldn't be so fucking annoying if there was some universal tagging choice for it. So whenever I get into a new fandom/character I don't have to add "-OC, -reader, -self-insert, -y/n, -OFC" and so on. And god forbid you want to look thru fanfic archives other than AO3. Places like FF.net make it nearly impossible to filter that stuff out.

FF.net explicitly gives you the option to see stories without OC characters. It is just the OC writers refuse to tag because they insist that once you read their Suestory you'll love it so they won't select any tags that let you screen it out. And AO3, with its tags system from hell is even worse for that.

That is why OCs are so hated, the writers refuse to accept that people just do not want to read them and tag accordingly.

Yup. I can't stand people on FF that don't tag their OC characters.

"Character/OC" doesn't always mean "Character/self-insert." I don't assume a background pairing with an OC is necessarilly self-insert. Also, I've read lots of fics that ship A/B but temporarilly pair off A or B with an OC so the other one can get jealous and admit their feelings.

NAYRT and yes you're right but that kind of ambiguity and complexity is actually exactly what makes it so hard to filter for self-insert fics. So it goes back to the same point

ayrr

I completely agree, but I guess I feel that filtering out all OCs means potentially missing out on a lot of good fic with completely harmless, non-self-insert, often mostly background OCs. Personally, I'm willing to risk having to backbutton out of a fic, assuming there weren't other warning signs to turn me away first.

This is where having a way to distinguish background pairings from main pairings would help. Otherwise, there's no way to seperate self-insert OCs since it would be on the honor system and where you draw the line between "proxy for me" and "character with a lot of me in them" is uncertain.

I have no problem with that but I think the problem is it's impossible to filter the OC tag out for when they are in the background or the main character.

Yeah, like I said to the other anon, I agree, but I'd rather weed out terrible self-inserts on a case-by-case basis than eliminate everything with "OC" in a tag.
