100% agreed, who gives a shit. Just be considerate about tagging and all that.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! People can write whatever they want, as long as they make sure to label whatever it is so people who don't like it can stay away, and people who do can find it. It doesn't sound hard, and yet...

I am going to agree with this so much!

I remember writing fic in my teenage years-- fic where I interact with the characters of my favorite video games. I still have the notebook, a 25 year old notebook that shows the wear of age. I look back at it and go "Wow, at least I was writing back then". Writing anything gives you practice, but also it helps you go through some of the harder things that adolescents have to go through.

If it weren't for my imaginings as a teenager, I wouldn't of been able to stand being bullied for things the 'at the time' unpopular things that I liked.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It'd do the world some good if more people could learn to stay in their lane.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't get the point of sharing it though, it's the equivalent of sharing your private fantasies or a diary, and neither of those things is stuff that everyone needs to see.

Maybe it's because I grew up when the internet wasn't so public but I really feel like not everything needs to be shared with everyone. Yeah, I can and do ignore self insert fic, but I also just don't know why anyone would want to share it or what good it does other people in seeing it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but why do you care if someone does want to share it though

It's more like, I don't get the expectation that others are actually going to read your self-insert Mary Sue fic, so it's the most annoying when it's posted all over the fucking place begging for reviews.

I agree that they are perfectly fantastic to write, they can be fun fantasies and anything that gets you to sit down and write is constructive. If you post it, cool, good for you. Just don't expect to get a following, and it's a little weird to advertise it everywhere.

Not everyone feels the way you do? For a lot of people, it's just a story, or maybe they don't mind sharing this one private thing about themselves. They're still being selective about what they share, it's just that they select different things than you do.

I'm trying not to be a jerk here, but this really is not that difficult to grasp unless you come from a planet where everyone has the same opinion about everything, all the time.

But there are other people out there who are reading and liking those stories. It "does them good" to have something they enjoy reading.

And the authors post the stories for the same reason than any other writer does: because they want to share the story with someone else, and want to be a part of the community.

There are some people deranged enough to think there are people who would actually ship them with fictional characters and draw fanart of them. That, or that have no sense of shame to know they are being obnoxious.

Because some people actually enjoy reading self-insert, and not everyone is so self conscious that they care overly much that people think it's lame. The same reasons people post any other type of fic.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Especially because Mary Sues and self-inserts are really common in young/new writers and I think it's fine. Everyone's got to start somewhere! They don't necessarily need to be lectured or condescended to about the quality of their writing even by well meaning people. (Though honestly, a lot of people do the whole concern troll thing and they don't truly mean well.) Maybe they'll get better, maybe they won't. Unless they ask for advice, let them have fun with it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't be so fucking annoying if there was some universal tagging choice for it. So whenever I get into a new fandom/character I don't have to add "-OC, -reader, -self-insert, -y/n, -OFC" and so on. And god forbid you want to look thru fanfic archives other than AO3. Places like FF.net make it nearly impossible to filter that stuff out.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
FF.net explicitly gives you the option to see stories without OC characters. It is just the OC writers refuse to tag because they insist that once you read their Suestory you'll love it so they won't select any tags that let you screen it out. And AO3, with its tags system from hell is even worse for that.

That is why OCs are so hated, the writers refuse to accept that people just do not want to read them and tag accordingly.

"Character/OC" doesn't always mean "Character/self-insert." I don't assume a background pairing with an OC is necessarilly self-insert. Also, I've read lots of fics that ship A/B but temporarilly pair off A or B with an OC so the other one can get jealous and admit their feelings.

I did and I am SO glad I never posted any of it because I looked back on it years later and... it was truly awful and embarrassing.

THIS. WTF is it with people saying 'don't post your fic 'cause I don't like it!!' Screw that. Tons of people hate RPF/RPS, but I write it, i read it, and i post it.

Nobody is gonna force you to read it, sheesh.

Yeah, maybe, but I also don't get the other side - that it's something special and amazing that should be admired and lauded and appreciated.
It's fine. It's natural. It's fun for the people involved. I wrote Mary Sue Self-Insert characters when I was a teen, too. Nobody had to tell me to write them, and later, nobody had to tell me that there is value in "graduating" from them if I want to develop my writing and get a wider audience in fandom spaces.

And some people can grow up and write thinly-veiled SI original fiction and get lauded for it.

Man there's loads of fic I've got no interest in reading but I'd never say that people can't post it. Post it, just tag it so I can filter it out and I'll be good. Simple as.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't go looking for self-insert fic but it is virtually impossible to avoid.

My current fandom has hundreds (and growing) "scenario" blogs where people describe themselves and as for scenarios of them x fictional character. They are a fucking plague and no matter how many times I block one two more pop up.

I mean... clearly there is a demand for it... but for fucks sake I don't give a single fuck about you shipping yourself with a character when I go into fandom related tags.

Yup to your secret anon. However, I don't feel like I need an excuse to enjoy self inserts, or any of the other ships I like. And I am no longer a teenage girl.

Post, enjoy, let others enjoy, and if you don't dig it, keep moving. Tagging appropriately is pretty easy. I abide by this rule (and happily avoid fic I don't want to read) when posting and searching for fic.

And I manage to do this and
a) find an archive of fic I wanted to read (that linked/affiliated to other ship specific archives, I guess it was a happier time in the fandom back then?)
b) navigate the dredges of FF.net (it's not as bad as we all make it out to be, lbh)
c) find my preferred ships on LJ
d) find my preferred ships on AO3.

And yes, the preferred ship has almost always started out with self inserts, then actual ships. I feel very sassy posting all this. But seriously.
