It's fine. It's natural. It's fun for the people involved. I wrote Mary Sue Self-Insert characters when I was a teen, too. Nobody had to tell me to write them, and later, nobody had to tell me that there is value in "graduating" from them if I want to develop my writing and get a wider audience in fandom spaces.
And some people can grow up and write thinly-veiled SI original fiction and get lauded for it.

Yes thank you. I do think the appeal of Mary Sue fic is some part of the teenage psychology (yeah, I'm also guilty of it), but there's a difference between letting the kids have their fun, and actively celebrating something that's almost per definition is bad writing.
