Ross Geller

He gets so much more hate than the other 5, but they're all terrible people. People act like he was the worst thing about the Ross/Rachel relationship when Rachel was just as bad, if not worse.

I also hate when people use hatred of him to prop up Joey as if Joey isn't a seriously flawed character.

I tried watching Friends, and I could only watch a few episodes because everyone seemed unlikable to me. I don't get why the focus would be on just one of them more than the others because they all seemed equally annoying.

So like. How I think of it is that like... yeah, all the characters would be really annoying in real life. None of them would be good people. But they're not real people - they're sitcom characters, and all of their characteristics have to be judged in relation to their role as sitcom characters. So, for instance, you can render something like Monica's bossiness as just a character quirk that gets played for laughs.

I think the reason that it's a problem with Ross is because, more than any other character, he takes on the role of a romantic comedy protagonist. That element exists with all the other characters but it's especially pronounced with Ross especially during the early seasons, and we're really meant to sympathize with him as a romcom protagonist (or at least it feels that way). And because of his various annoying qualities and one thing and another, it just doesn't work and the tonal dissonance is immensely frustrating. But it doesn't exist as much for Monica or Joey or whoever.
