Unpopular characters that you love

Are there any characters that seem unpopular or hated in the fandom, but you love them? Are there any characters that get a lot of hate that you feel very protective of?

Missy from Doctor Who gets a lot of hate, as does River. I adore them both.

Lily Aldrin on HIMYM seems to be the most hated character on that show. I like her a lot. She's flawed but interesting.

I love Cersei. She's horrible. She's an awful person. But I love her. She's an interesting character to me.

Catelyn Stark used to get a lot of hate, and I always loved her.

For some reason, Callie Torres gets a lot of hate in the Grey's Anatomy fandom, even among people for whom she's part of their OTP. She's my favorite (tied with Christina), and I will forever defend her.

I will also forever defend Janeway, my favorite Star Trek captain.

People hate Lily and Captain Janeway? So glad I just watched and enjoyed those shows in my own happy little bubble.

Lily is my favorite character.

And as for Callie hate, for whatever reason, I've found it's surprisingly common in popular femslash fandoms for the majority of the shippers to basically outright hate one half of them (a lot of Clexa fans I've seen seem to hate Clarke and a lot of Swan Queen shippers seem to hate Emma.) That's just what I've observed though. I could be totally off.

I also haven't seen a lot of Grey's, but I do love Callie from what I've seen of her (in her earliest appearances, where she's with George. I like her as a character. She strikes me as tough but fair.)

Cristina is also my favorite Grey's character, for as much of the show that I've seen.

I adore both Missy and River. I really didn't like River's backstory, but I love her character and it's always delightful to see her onscreen. Missy is probably my favorite incarnation of the Master. She's just great.

This is going to be a character that probably no one remembers. But Sam from The Walking Dead. This kid.



I hated how show watchers whined about how scared Sam acted. He was an 8 year old who had his world fall apart around him. He had a dead abusive father, a psychopathic brother, and mom who seemed to barely acknowledge his existence. He's seen friends and family die around him. He had an adult (Carol) threaten to tie him up to a tree outside so zombies could eat him alive. Poor, poor Sam.

I never saw any hate for Paco from Jackie Chan Adventures that had any more substance than "he's annoying" or (more commonly) "he gets in the way of Jade/(demon)!" Since I already liked him, I became rather protective of him as a result.

I don't know about "love" but I've been in a few fandoms where people are over the top about hating kid characters and I usually have trouble hating kids all that much.

Like Carl from Walking Dead is an example, fandom is starting to like him more now but I've always liked him.

I like kid characters when they are not just a prop for the adults. I've always liked Carl, but don't like characters like Henry from OUAT.

Most of them, to be honest. The more hate I see for a character, the more I just naturally want to defend them. I like defending things better than criticizing them in general.

I don't really love Dawn from Buffy, but I don't get the Dawn hate. Actually, as the youngest I can relate to her.

Also, Tonks from Harry Potter.

My favorite character in Battlestar Galactica was Helo. Most people thought he was borrrrring, but I just loved him. I loved him for being, in a world otherwise populated by Morally Gray characters, a straight-up Good guy. He reminded me of a well-trained Rottweiler who was a fierce guard dog but very loyal and good to his family.

One scene always stands out in my mind as encapsulating why I loved him. In the scene, his wife Athena is very upset about the disappearance of their daughter and is mentally shutting down and refusing to speak to him. He wants to get through to her and talk to her about what's going on, and he's getting frustrated with her silence.

The way the scene was going emotionally, I was expecting him to get physical with her -- grab her and shake her, or something -- and the actor playing Helo is a very tall, muscular dude and the actress playing Athena is a tall woman but very thin and slight-framed, so any kind of physical threat or gesture on his part would have carried with it a threat of him hurting her. I was dreading this scene becoming a "Helo finally snaps" moment, and when at one point he steps into her personal space, I was like, "Ohhhh no, here we go." But he didn't threaten her at all. IIRC, he broke into tears and just pleaded with her to speak to him.

It just really solidified the character as a truly good-hearted man with good intentions who, even at peak stress, would never hurt the people he loved.

Varrick from LoK, kind of? Fandom opinions on him tend to fluctuate. He's either the funniest character, a horrible abusive sexist, or awful because he "steals" screen time from another character.

*shrugs* I just love tricksterie, asshole characters (especially if they're not THAT bad deep down).

Yuri Plisetsky from Yuri On Ice isn't universally unpopular, but he's very polarizing. Some people thought he was the only good part of the show, and some thought he was the only bad part of it. But the first group of people seem to have left the fandom after the show ended, and the second group are still around and there's been extra backlash against him recently because of his EX skate bonus footage in the last DVD.

And yes, I'm so damn protective of him when I see hate. Especially the kind where fanfic writers make Victor and Yuuri OOC to treat him as just some annoying kid they tolerate. They could at least label those fics as "AU where Victor and Yuuri treat Yurio the way I wish they had in canon instead of the way they actually do."

MCU Sharon Carter. I really liked what we were shown in CATWS, and thought she was badly underserved in CACW.

It doesn't help that a lot of the negativity is shipwank trying to pretend that it's not shipwank.

I liked Jennifer Keller on SGA. Did I like her dating McKay? No, that was weird and she deserved better. The hate for her was so strong it was ridiculous, the fandom didn't even give her a chance.

Honestly, a lot of characters that will get the over the top hate I end up liking. Because I'm contrary. But I can't really think of any other examples at the moment.

Light Yagami from Death Note, though I think he's actually very popular, it's just the people who hate him, really hate him. idk, it's one of those cases where you have to reconcile that loving a character isn't the same as supporting them.

Ross Geller

He gets so much more hate than the other 5, but they're all terrible people. People act like he was the worst thing about the Ross/Rachel relationship when Rachel was just as bad, if not worse.

I also hate when people use hatred of him to prop up Joey as if Joey isn't a seriously flawed character.

Also: Dan Humphrey.

He's my favorite, but there's a fair portion of the fandom that's exclusively NJBC friendly.

Caveat: This is only TV!Dan. Book!Dan is really annoying and irritating.

Bucky Barnes, in both the comics and the MCU. He's popular, but he also has a large, vocal hatedom, and the people who hate him really, really hate him.
