Spending Money

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What's a reasonable amount of money to bring on a solo, week-long vacation? It's in another country and accomodation is taken care of. So how much for public transportation, food and souvenirs?

Anywhere between ten dollars and ten million dollars, anything more is just being flash.

Where you going, who you buying for, what sort of gifts do you want to buy, and what is your nominal budget?

It depends soooooooooooo much on cost of living and how much you want to spend and the specifics of where you're going, it's almost impossible to answer

but assuming there's no major difference in COL, I would probably figure on 150 to 200 as a baseline for a week

What anon above me said. Prices for things like public transportation can be wildly different from country to country - and what type of transportation are you talking? Inside the city? Intercity?
Will you be eating out? Is it self-catering?
Honestly, I think you need to ask yourself what your budget is, and go based on that....

Hard to determine with no information about where you are going.

It varies so much!! Where are you going? What kind of food do you eat? And souvenirs, that's so generic, I can spend $20 in one trip and $100/day on another.

My general advice is to have about $20/day cash and bring multiple credit cards. Call your credit card company ahead of time to let them know you'll be away on vacation and find out if they charge any foreign transaction fees.

I've mostly traveled in major cities in Europe and Japan and all over the US, so using a credit card is never an issue.

Like the others have said, really depends on where you're going. Also, where you're from and what the exchange will look like. $100 in one country will be fine, but then in another country might not last you a day.

People can't really help you if you're not going to tell them specifics. The answer could be drastically different if you're going to Japan vs. Costa Rica, whether you want to eat at Michelin star restaurants or street food, and how the hell would anyone but you know how many souvenirs (or what quality) you're going to want to buy??

If you've done your research, you should already have an idea of how much you should budget for public transport and food. If you haven't done your research, you're probably not prepared for a solo international trip.

I spent a week in London (not counting our arrival or departure days.) My mom loaded our Oyster cards (for the Underground) with fifty pounds each, and we didn't come anywhere near running out, but we did a fairly good job of planning our itinerary so that we were generally hitting multiple destinations in an area, rather than hopping on and off the tube all the time.

(As an aside, if anybody is going to London, get the London Pass. It is SO worth it, not only in money saved, but also wait times reduced.)

Between us, we probably spent thirty of forty pounds on food per day, not including breakfast because we were staying in a B&B. Part of this, though, was because my mom can be fairly reluctant to try new foods (unless they include chocolate), while I did NOT travel halfway around the world to eat at McDonald's. So we tended to go to places with a larger/more varied menu, which therefore meant more expensive.

Other than that, I probably spent about a two hundred pounds, for snacks, a few beers (my mom thinks anything more than communion wine is "too much" alcohol) and presents. I have a big family, and a lot of my cousins have kids, so that was where the bulk of my "spending money" went.
