It treated its main female character like a damn person, for one. The other commenters have talked about the rest.

That is why people love it. And why the Tom Cruise one is gonna suck balls.

Well, there was a lot of running in the 1999 version. So that will translate at least. And the Mummy does deal with a weirdo cult like religion which has bizarre rituals, so there is that too.

Running and a cult has nothing to do with it. The characters and how they were treated were what drew people in. The treasure hunt was just icing.
