It's a pretty fucking good comedic adventure movie, and they don't make enough adventure movies. Also, it cares a lot more about its romantic plotline than a lot of other comparable movies and is a lot more shippable in that sense. Also, I guess it has a backstory and sequels and all that crap. Also, maybe it just came out at the right time to really impact on people or something, I don't know.

Anyway it's a good movie and they should make more movies like it.

It is a good fun action-adventure romp with decent acting, decent story, and it came out at just the right time that people were looking for exactly that. It hit the nostalgia window for a lot of people, right before we plunged down the grimdark realistic-and-edgy window where everything was filmed in blue or muddy brown. People look back on it as fun and it reminds them of the good times before 9/11.

Am I remembering wrong? Didn't this movie have yellow filtering, at least for some scenes? (It's been a long time since I saw it, admittedly.)\

Not as bad as the cyan and orange high contrast cinematography that became common later, though.

What? The movie was mostly brown and orange....

it's nice that people enjoy this movie. Personally I couldn't stick around past the first ten minutes.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people have a lot of love for it because it's a good example of the genre, not because they believe it's a cinematic masterpiece. It's fun, not terribly complicated, and doesn't take itself too seriously. If there were more examples of an action/adventure film like this, maybe it wouldn't stand out in peoples' minds so much, but there aren't.

It treated its main female character like a damn person, for one. The other commenters have talked about the rest.

That is why people love it. And why the Tom Cruise one is gonna suck balls.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there was a lot of running in the 1999 version. So that will translate at least. And the Mummy does deal with a weirdo cult like religion which has bizarre rituals, so there is that too.

What exactly do you think the relation should be between people liking a thing, and it being an amazing cinematic masterpiece?

I mean for Pete's sake. This is fandom we're talking about. Did you think that Supernatural and Teen Wolf were amazing world-shaking masterpieces of televisual art?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
If you wanted an analysis of my obsession, I'm not really sentient enough to give you one right now, it's just one of my favourite movies. It's fun, it's a good mix of banter and adventure, it's a nice nostalgia trip, and it has Evie and Jonathan Carnahan, who are two of my favourite characters in anything ever. Also I can quote like 60% of the movie off the top of my head. IDK, maybe it just hit at the right time for me to latch onto it and never let go?

Evie and Jonathan probably have a lot to do with it, though. Best irresponsible mummy-raising artefact-lifting badass siblings ever.

It's ridiculous. That's the point. It's a ridiculous movie and it knows it and it hit enough of the right notes to be very enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I see it as a nostalgia thing. I remember seeing it as a kid when it first came out, so when I see it mentioned or hear people talking about it, it's like "Oh hey, I remember that too!" Same goes for a lot of 90's/early 00's stuff that is kind of silly looking back, it's just fun to remember. I've rewatched it recently and still enjoyed it, but I doubt I would get the appeal if I only saw it for the first time recently.

My love for this movie knows no bounds tbh. Like sure it is not Oscar worthy in any sense(except maybe for special effects/costumes, but that's only a maybe), but it is so much goddamn fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, has an absolutely amazing cast that does well with what they're given, for a dumb action movie it's actually written fairly well, and it has one of my top action heroines ever.

Seriously Evie is fantastic and drives the narrative due to her own desire for adventure and doesn't need to physically kick-ass in order to defeat the bad-guy.

(I can fully accept people not liking it though, we've all got different tastes and if this movie doesn't jive for you? That's cool).

You shut your dirty whore mouth, OP. A cinematic masterpiece is exactly what this movie is! :|

I've always wondered how there are enough fans to justify keeping the ride in at Universal, but the passionate replies to this are pretty eye-opening I guess. I just don't know anyone personally who cares about this movie, it seems.

Nostalgia. It was a fun movie back then and people hold a lot of good memories of it. As with anything.

It's not that hard to understand :/

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's a damn fun movie. It doesn't need to be anything more than that.

It isn't some amazing cinamtic masterpiece

Lies! All lies!!!

But seriously, it's a fun movie to watch and doesn't take itself super seriously. I genuinely enjoy it.

Also personal opinion but Brendan Fraser was very charming in the movie and I used to have such a crush on him when I was younger. Maybe still do.

You are on fandom secrets. What in your experience here has led you to believe something needs to be a masterpiece for people to get obsessed with it? At least The Mummy is good.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDDDDEEEEEE The Mummy is The Best Action/Comedy Movie in AGES. It's fun & funny, doesn't take itself seriously, has a great cast of characters & actors alike, a sympathetic villain who's mostly naked, & Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz being cute together (they are so cute).

It's absolutely not a cinematic masterpiece. Is that a prerequisite for liking movies now? They have to be a MASTERPIECE?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I give up, OP.

At least the rest of us will have a cute action comedy popcorn movie.

I don't have to pretend my mac n' cheese is filet mignon in order to enjoy eating it. I can like silly stuff like the original Transformers cartoon without needing it to be deep and literary like Shakespeare.

Get off your high horse and quit pretending that quality is supposed to be equal to your personal taste.

I don't like the movie, but I can see why people would like it/be obsessed with it. It's all about what people like-- I dislike Kingdom Hearts, but I think it's a bit petty to say "I cannot see why people are obsessed with it"

They are obsessed with it because they like it and good for them!

You do you, and they will do them.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not a masterpiece, I'll grant you, but it's a childhood classic of mine that I still enjoy.

Yes, of course, there are issues with it, but w/e...

I grew up wanting to be like Evie: intelligent, resourceful, beautiful, and we both love books! Also, I was very interested in Ancient Egypt and this movie only fueled the fire.

It doesn't hurt that I thought Brendan Fraser (as the roguish American hero) was pretty cute (Bonus when we were given Oded Fehr <3). I felt like everyone (even the old man pilot, even the high priest) had a pretty good share in the tale.

Fun movie, able to see it with a family (any innuendo was smooth enough to fly over my head, but the chemistry was clear enough that even my 7 year old self could tell they liked each other). Adventure, fun, romance, and supernatural all in one. Classic.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's another thing I don't think I've seen anyone discussed: the comedy isn't dependent on anyone being profoundly embarrassed, embarrassingly stupid or awkward, or anything else that's clearly meant to make the audience cringe for funnies. People might get embarrassed or be awkward but it's a momentary lapse on a more everyday scale, for lack of a better description. And that doesn't happen often in comedy blockbusters anymore.
