Re: Secrets for/random thoughts on older fandoms

Some things are just better as standalone things. Especially when the original was intended to be standalone, like in the case of FFVII. To me, the very idea of a sequel ruins it, because of the intentionally ambiguous ending (which was what made the game so amazing). Plus, when you're revisiting it 10, 15 years down the line with a different team, it's no wonder the atmosphere and characters change.

I think some series lend themselves better to further worldbuilding, like, say, Star Wars. Some just don't.

I think that FFVII miiiight have worked with prequels - there was a lot of background, there - but everything got completely bullshit, and I don't think anybody on the team had an actual clue what the characters' charaterizations were supposed to actually be. Also they were really busy sucking Sephiroth's dick. Also they put Gackt in there.
Just a pile of mess.

Yeah, long before the sequels were announced, I thought a prequel COULD work.

But I don't think they should've touched the original characters at all. I would've set the sequel in the war between the Cetra and JENOVA. That would've been awesome to see, and if they totally fucked it up, who really cares, the original characters and story would still be sacrosanct.

Fuck, the war between the Cetra and Jenova could have been so cool, now I'm sad it doesn't exist :I

I am a little regretful we don't get any proper characterization of Cloud when it's him in his own head, rather than him+a whole circus in there. That was kind of what I hoped for from CC, or AC, but both of those were a mess, and I'm pretty sure nobody involved had a clue what Cloud's character traits even are.

If they wanted something more linked to the story, mayyyybe like Gast-era could have worked? But I agree with you, they probably should have left the original game characters alone.

DA

Actually it's a bit stupider than that. See, Nomura did have a clue, buuuut to quote from Wikipedia's article about Cloud:

"Although Nomura stated that Cloud was a more positive character in Final Fantasy VII than in Advent Children, he did not believe that such an "'upbeat' image of him is what stuck in the minds of the fans", and the script was written to explain why Cloud returned to a state of mind "consistent with the fans' view of him.""

In short, they changed him so he'd fit the fanon version.

I have seen that quote and it fills me with deep, burning, and unabating anger at how those fans fucked everything up for us. I am angry at the fans for being idiots, angry at Nomura for caving, and angry that now we're probably stuck with all this forever because they'll probably fuck him up in the remake and we'll forever have the Flanderized fanon version of doom-and-gloom!Cloud.

Fuck.

And I say this as somebody who fucking LOVES angst, okay.
