I think it's not that people don't notice it, it's just that sameface and recycled designs are so common in anime style video games that it's just a given and not really worth dwelling on.

While some people certainly do say things like the characters in that comic because they're trying too hard to be seen as special or because they believe themselves superior, I think people backlash too hard to them. We've poked so much fun at the "special snowflakes" portrayed in the comic that the act of not caring about a popular thing is now seen as weird and hostile, and I find it ridiculous. It's okay to be frustrated by trends you find obnoxious, or to not like every single thing your peers like.
