People who are obese are a burden on society. Obese people need more healthcare. If they don't have insurance, tax payers are paying for them. Obese parents also teach their children unhealthy practices which can shorten how old a child may live.

Lots of things cause people to be a burden on society. Should we restrict welfare recipients on the basis of whether they smoke cigarettes or drink beer? Or whether they're shitty drivers?

Uhhh, as soon as they can use their food stamps to buy beer or cigarettes, yes. You do know you can't use food stamps to buy those things or a car?

It never stopped a single person drinking, smoking, or even driving. It just stops them doing those things safely and legally. Same as any attempt to deny them the ability to eat as they choose. It will only deny them the ability to do so safely.

You just like the idea of telling people what to do and the nice sense of smug satisfaction it gives you.

I don't see why that makes a difference in principle. Genuinely! I'm not being sarcastic here. I don't think it makes any difference. I think people assume that there's a difference, but I think the difference is illusory. At the point where you think that the state should take action to prevent people on welfare from doing unhealthy things because of the costs to the taxpayer associated with medical treatment, I think that the same principle should apply generally. I don't see why it should matter whether those risks arise from spending money on food or not. The only difference is how easy it is to means test those things. But to me, I don't think you have the right to control welfare beneficiaries' lives like that. Either people on welfare have the responsibility to diminish the costs to the taxpayer, or they don't.

No. If the government is giving you money. They should be able to decide what you do with it.
