If those are still (as in, not animated) character portraits, my suspicion is the artist was given the one pose or poses to do with the character facing right and the programmers had basic "face left/face right" code that simply mirrors the portraits. So the guy would have on a woman's jacket half the time, too.

As someone who can't tell what's wrong with this image, what's wrong with this image?

The woman is dressed the wrong way - you only wrap clothing that way in various Asian cultures when dressing the dead for their funeral.

Also, in Western fashion, it's typical for men's clothes to button the other way.

I can honestly say I've never noticed which way anything buttons. XD

Men's clothes are supposed to button to the right and women's to the left. This is not always the case IRL though!

Part of my job involves outdoor work and I buy most of my outdoor work clothes at the Goodwill because they're going to have a short lifespan anyway so might as well get them cheap. I tend to buy men's shirts for this for a variety of reasons, and they do usually button on the other side than my normal women's shirts. In fact, switching back and forth can be confusing and I'll find myself reaching for the wrong side!

in the realm of visual novels it's an enjoyable change imo considering like 90% of the art is either terrible or anime-style (or both).

that said, it reminds me more of the art in those point-and-click "find the objects" games lol

I always feel the art in those hidden object games (which is, if anon above is correct, something the artist worked on before) tends to look like a cross between uber-kitsch and weirdly traced art, so i wouldn't be surprised if there was some inspiration involved...
