Since I am going to be unemployed for a bit...

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2017-06-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
What is some stuff I should take time to learn for my future job search? Right now, I am looking at getting better at Excel (I only know the basics). Anything else I might want to look into learning or doing?

What kind of jobs are you looking for?

Not sure yet, tbh. I have a degree in Special Education but don't want to teach children. I've been working in a warehouse for three years and don't want to do that again.

Maybe teaching adults? Or just an office job. I don't need a flashy job. Just something that won't destroy my back before the age of 40.

If you're wanting some sort of office work like administrative assistant, you might familiarize yourself with the Microsoft Office suite. But realistically, to get those jobs you'll need some kind of actual experience beyond saying on your resume "I know how to use this program." In my city, there's an organization that coordinates volunteer efforts in the community, and there's usually someone looking for someone to do office-y things. You might see if you've got something similar.

Or - and this might not be helpful right this second; I'm not 100% sure of timing for training - you could try getting on as a tax preparer. My sister did that with Liberty Tax service for a year or two, then with an independent tax organization and it's lead her a job in accounts payable at a casino having never taken a single finance-related course outside of her tax prep training.

Of course, that was hectic as hell and included hella long days during tax season.

Huh. I wonder why that was anon instead of logged in.

I do have some office skills based on previous jobs. And my warehouse job required me to do a bit of everything so I can change my resume a bit depending on what I am applying to.

Not sure about taxes because I am horrible at math. :( But I am going to brush up on my office skills.

Get a truck drivers license or a forklift operators license.

I doubt I could ever drive a truck (I struggle with a car). And I really would like to move out of the warehouse setting. Should have put that in the main body!

That depends. What sort of work are you looking for?

I'm actually looking for new skills as well (my job is great but temporary). I'm thinking of getting certified in basic computer skills. Also, first-aid.

It is so hard to find legitimate certification programs for so many of these things. :P

You can become a Microsoft Specialist:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/learning/specialist-certification.aspx

How do you feel about IT? You can get basic certifications and work at a helpdesk or the like.

If you're desperate enough, call centers are always hiring.

Yeah, it's hard to find legitimate programs. It's fun to read about though: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/4l0w49/serious_what_are_some_free_certifications_that/

Oooooh. That Reddit link looks good. I could probably do IT. I was the sort of IT person at the warehouse job because I knew how to google computer problems.

Learning a trade is the "best" solution in the sense that you'll have something you can carry with you and a defined skill that will almost guarantee you the chance at a job wherever. And will probably pay better than entry level blue collar work. It can take a little investment to get there, though, because you'll want official training, not a "I learned it myself". (unless the thing in question is web design or another computer related task, the one field that is basically the opposite, degrees mean shit but personal experience counts for everything)

But if you want an office job, ABSOLUTELY brush up on Microsoft Office (especially Excel). Learn basic stuff about playing around with data, sorting it, basic functions. If you work at a small company, you may want to learn basic web design stuff. Not coding, but learn Wordpress and basic HTML. Actually go make yourself a free, professional Wordpress website and include that on your resume as an example of your work to prove you have the experience. It's very simple, and many companies use it, or at least will be impressed that you can somewhat understand managing and learn quickly.

In your free time, find somewhere to volunteer. Especially somewhere where you can sit at a front desk and answer phone calls. That'll help you nudge your way into a desk job. ANY administrative experience you can get will be helpful. Plus, if you volunteer, you can hopefully get a job reference out of the deal, too.

If desk work isn't for you, there are some jobs that will train you on the spot. I was a phlebotomist for 8 months between school. Zero experience, my life had nothing to do with medical stuff at all. It was at one of those plasma donation places that are basically McPhlebotomy. It didn't pay super great but it felt a little more "professional", and after a year or so I bet I could've gotten a better paying job in a real clinic.

I'd have to see what kind of trade I'd be good at. I took welding in high school and sucked at it because my hands are super shaky

I am working on Microsoft Office (and SQL) now! I know some basic HTML because I had to help clean up and maintain the website for my warehouse job (I did a bit of everything).

I will start looking for some volunteer opportunities and entry level jobs. Also, McPhlebotomy is a great word!

Seems you're in the US, so maybe look into Americorp/VISTA? You have skills they like, but you can tell them you want to do admin/grant writing/different things like that, and they may be able to find you a spot.

They have Summer-only jobs and then year-long jobs that can become permanent placement things. At the very least, it looks really good on your resume.

Good luck!

Thanks! I am looking into them now. Will have to see what they have available near me.

I'm an Americorps member. Anything you'd like to know?

I love my job, but the pay is awful. Less than minimum wage. It does look good on a resume; I'm getting tons of interviews because of it.

What would be the best job options for someone with a bit of social anxiety? I am good one on one and small groups. I don't really care about pay so that isn't a problem!

I work at a school, but there are many options. It depends on which state you're in. There are different factions, like the education corps, health corps, etc.

I also recommend looking at Service Year:

With Excel, I highly recommend mastering the pivot table. Some people at work think I'm a wizard just because I can pivot.
