Goku isn't the worst dad ever...but he's still pretty terrible.

He may be the worst dad in the DBZ verse. Trying to think of a worse one. Even King Cold didn't abandon his (full grown) son.

King Vegeta seemed pretty bad. And Bardock.

Forgot about King Vegeta. Though, Bardock didn't seem like a bad parent, just not around.

It that really that unusual for Goku? He is always abandoning his family.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
For a REASON though. And a lot of that was because he was dead. This was just "hey you're strong I'm going to move in with you right away!"

I think Super has the whole family move to Uub's village while Goku trains him. Super has been fixing stuff here and there (my favorite will forever be that Saiyans like strong-tempered women hahaha).

Super hasn't reached the end of Z yet. Uub is still a child, they've only noticed his presence on Earth a couple of episodes ago.

Really? Dang, I remember seeing it on a manga panel. Weird. Maybe I dreamed it.

I remember watching that episode lol. God I hated that ending. Like yeah Goku left his family a lot but that story direction felt like it was a step too far.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't Toriyama say that Goku never truly loved his wife (and maybe even the children? I don't remember) and that he was just with them because whatever.

[personal profile] digitalghosts 2017-06-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be weird ... and I only watched the old anime where it felt like Chi Chi was more of his nagging mum in the end. However, he really shown he loved his kids and Goten got less of it but still.

Yeah, over here: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/episode-bardock-akira-toriyama-super-qa/

"Saiyans don’t have much of a concept of “family”."

"Vegeta, whose pride had been deeply wounded, sought help from Bulma, and little by little, his ruthless personality changed. Nowadays, you certainly might be able to say that. On the other hand, Goku might not have a sense of family members like Gohan and Chi-Chi except as one of his companions."

etc.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean he doesn't love her. Just that he doesn't really strike a difference between family and friends. And since we know he loves his friends, it stands to reason that he loves Chichi...even if it isn't a love as his wife but a platonic love.

Yeah I hope Super doesn't do anything like that, or at least he should take his family with him or bring the kid into his family because it might be funny to joke that Goku is a terrible dad but I don't want his family to actually be abandoned by him. None of them deserve that.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Plus, as least as far as Z ends, he hasn't even cleared it with Oob's family.

I read an interesting thing that the creator apparently stated. Granted, it was back in 97, but he said that Goku didn't feel the same way that humans do. So when ever something sad or super angering happened, he'd feel a flash of whatever that was, then the next day be all hunky dory. So if he lost Chi Chi or Gohan, he'd be all "What? No!" then later "Ohh food!"

Vegeta apparently actually FEELS, which is a rarity amongst Saiyans.

Now, as I have yet to actually finish that series, I dunno how well he portrayed that. I just find it interesting.

Goku has to have some pretty intense emotional reactions though since it was fury and love that made him go super in the first place. If he was that scattered in his emotions, he wouldn't have been able to channel that at Krillin's death.

I didn't say he doesn't feel. He feels. Just not the same way humans do. He feels hard but fleeting. In fact, I think Kuriyama was annoyed with some changes they did in the show to make Goku more...human like.

Idk why this shocks people still. Goku has never been a saint or a hero or even a good person TBH. The anime distilled the fuck outta him and tried to make him more heroic than he actually is. Remember this is the guy who:
-let vegeta live so they could have a rematch
-wanted to fight frieza because he's strong and essentially let him live because there was no point
-allowed his pacifist son to get the shit kicked out of him for power
-didn't beat buu or even take his awakening seriously
-let vegeta fuck around with freeza
-and most recently, purposely reminded ZENO about the tournament of power even though he knows what's at stake and when Beerus advised him not to

Him ditching his family to go train a super strong boy to someday beat him is totally in character for him.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I've only really read the manga though.

And he's been impulsive when it comes to a lot of things, and he does a lot in the name of getting stronger, but this was different from any of those. This was just irrational and in a rush to end the series on a bang.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And I am talking about the manga. I think letting Cell beat the crap outta Gohan is easily the worst thing he's ever done and when Piccolo points out Gohan is a pacifist it baffles him. Him abandoning his family for Uub makes sense given how little concern he had for Gohan. It was rushed in the sense that it all happened in one chapter and to tie up those lingering plot threads in a convenient time skip. But totally believable for Goku to say kthxbai gonna go fight now to his family. He kinda has that little self awareness.

This is from a magazine article from back in '97 that offers some great insight into Goku's character.

AT:"..Son Goku from Dragonball doesn't fight for the sake of others, but because he wants to fight against strong guys. So once Dragonball got animated, at any rate, I've always been dissatisfied with the "Righteous hero"- type portrayal they gave him. I guess I couldn't quite get them to grasp the elements of "poison" that slip in an out of sight among the shadows."

This from 2014, Saikyo Jump Super Q&A:

AT:"Normally, Saiyans don't have much of a notion of romance or marriage, and apart from the royal family of Vegeta, they aren't particular about blood-relationships. Being in among all that, I suppose you could say that the pair of Bardock and Gine [Goku's parents] were those rare Saiyans who were joined by a bond other than for reproductive purposes."

Interviewer: "Since Saiyans are supposed to have no affection for family or friends, does this actually make Vegeta, who holds his family and his wife dear, an even stranger [kinder] Saiyan than Goku?"

AT:"Vegeta, whose pride had been deeply wounded, sought help from Bulma, and little by little, his ruthless personality changed. Nowadays you certainly might be able to say that. On the other hand, Goku might not have a sense of family members like Gohan or Chi-Chi except as one of his companions."

So take from that what you will OP ;)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and even with that it seemed far too impulsive.
