What are some signs that a TV show is running out of ideas?

babies.

This. And then it's weird when the baby hardly shows up and it's like the characters never had one until it's a plot point.

Or "adorable" young cousins that come to live with them or move next door.

Gods, yes. Take Scrubs, for example. It was fine when it was just Jordan (and then only with her first one) and Carla, but when Elliot started to get all baby-crazy, J.D. randomly got Kim pregnant (and all the nonsense that followed) and Jordan got pregnant again despite Dr. Cox's vasectomy? Yeah, that was when I just gave up on the show, apart from My Musical.

When they keep adding new characters that threaten to change the status quo but never really do very much.

Characters take a severe u-turn in terms of character development - regressing back to their whiny/petulant/whatever self that they were back in the beginning of the show. It's usually for fake drama, and has no lasting effect on the character or plot.

When the show becomes less 'what's going to happen next' to 'who's going to die next?'

When those 2 characters with UST finally hook up. See Bones and House.

On the one hand, I sort of agree. On the other hand, I HATE the long drawn-out convoluted reasons "why we can't be together" that are invented to keep UST going. Drives me nuts, and I always end up anti-shipping the characters I used to ship. Because if you repeatedly tell me why you can't be together, then DON'T be together.

House/Cuddy would have been a lot better if Cuddy had stayed the smart, competent woman she had been in earlier seasons of the show and if House hadn't gotten a lot nastier. the character I really hated was 13, though.

Romances between characters who were formerly running on UST.

When they start filling a season full of character wish fulfillment plots. See Parks and Rec.

When the story writers are trying way too hard for a twist (such as in a murder mystery), that they just make anybody the culprit. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, it comes off as "accuse now, think of motive later!" (which is weird for me to say, considering the guy in my icon)

When character A proposes to character B and they are getting ready to get married BUT WAIT!!! Character B can't get married because they are already married but didn't know it. Now they have to track down their estranged spouse to get a divorce.

See Bones, Castle, and kind-of Scorpion.

Grey's Anatomy did this plot. (Then again, what hasn't Grey's tackled as a plot at this point? LOL)

Wow, I can't believe that this is a thing THAT MANY shows have tried. It sounds so eye-rollingly stupid.

Magic powers. Wedding after wedding after wedding. Long-lost triplets. A tiny green space alien named Ozmodiar that only one caracter can see.
