... I could've sworn Growing the Beard meant becoming more mature. (Not necessarily Darker and Edgier, just... more mature.)

My take was always that it meant a show started hitting its stride and turning out quality non-cringey episodes that resonated with viewers.

I think it does in terms of character development, but the "hitting it's stride" thing is the show development version. They may even go hand-in-hand if the reason the show hits it's strike is because a key character develops.

Mind you, there is also the Beard of Grief, which is an easy visual cue of a male character neglecting himself due to grief.

Oh gods, this is so true-- there are so many series where I said "Don't worry-- it gets better". So now that I know there is an actual term for that trope, awesome! <3

Yes, I just found this fact out at our pub trivia quiz a couple weeks ago. I was surprised, it's not often I hear a new to me fandom term. We had to answer what show inspired it. I figured it out pretty quickly.

I feel like there are fewer works that grow the beard than jump the shark, but I always love to see it happen.

It's great, isn't it?

I never heard the phrase before (I am not a native English speaker), but I would guess it just meant someone or something matured?

And I am going to be the odd one out and say that I always preferred Riker without a beard - not that I found him sexy either way.

However, I don't think there is anyone I think look better, and definitely not sexier with a beard than without.
