... I could've sworn Growing the Beard meant becoming more mature. (Not necessarily Darker and Edgier, just... more mature.)

My take was always that it meant a show started hitting its stride and turning out quality non-cringey episodes that resonated with viewers.

I think it does in terms of character development, but the "hitting it's stride" thing is the show development version. They may even go hand-in-hand if the reason the show hits it's strike is because a key character develops.

Mind you, there is also the Beard of Grief, which is an easy visual cue of a male character neglecting himself due to grief.

Oh gods, this is so true-- there are so many series where I said "Don't worry-- it gets better". So now that I know there is an actual term for that trope, awesome! <3
