No, I wouldn't mind being the cool aunt to a friend's kid but you have a child, your life is basically beholden to theirs until you die, give or take.

Ha, that is very much the thinking of someone who does not want kids. If you do want kids, you don't really think of it as beholden to.

This is true enough, but the way your tone is sounds like they're a bad person for thinking that way...

OH, not what I meant at all! I was more just thinking it's a funny observation, that when you don't want kids you think of them in one light and when you do want them it's very different. It's the type of thing that's interesting and amusing to me, same thing different perspectives.

Oh, haha. That is true, I was like, wow, that sounded so mean... sorry!

Tone is hard to gauge on the internet.

Not necessarily. I love dogs and have had dogs but as a pet owner I *am* beholden to them and responsible for them. When children are left in my care, as an adult I *am* beholden to that child to look after it and make sure it doesn't harm itself or get in trouble. To say that I'm not would be being a totally irresponsible guardian.

I would love another dog, but getting one would mean being beholden to it in terms of time, money, and effort. Saying that it's a tradeoff that I'd joyfully make is not the same as saying I'm not beholden.

And yes, if I got a pet like a parrot that lived 80+ years I would be beholden to that pet until I died. That's why I would not get one.

With a child, it's assumed the child will grow and have its own life, but you never know. Some children need care your entire life and then some, depending on circumstances. Plus, most wouldn't be like "well it's your life you go on now" and refuse to help an adult child if they needed you. A lot of parents who should, aren't able to. Being a parent is a huge lump of responsibility and obligation, legal and emotional.

For a whole lot of people, it's a tradeoff they joyfully make, but let's not coat over the fact that they make it.
