I'll be the odd man out and say I agree with you fully, OP. I have a fic that I'm super-embarrassed about from more than 15 years ago - literal self-insert - that still has fans who say they religiously re-read it and wish I had finished it. I'm not offended that people still like it but knowing how bad it was and how terrible of a person I was when I wrote it makes me seriously question their taste.

If it bothers you that much, why not delete it?

+1. I deleted a stupid over the top fic I never really was satisfied with even then and aaaallll my songfic (like 3 or 4 god I was that type of fan) and have no regrets. I still get views on the remaining things, 10+ years after they were all abandoned, so some people like reading 16 year olds' weird ramblings long after the canons end.

What relation does the fic have to you being a terrible person at the time? Why do you think you were a terrible person even?

nayrt
Because we live in a current climate that doesn't allow for nuance. Everyone is either "good" or "terrible" and if the terrible ones try really hard and are really lucky, they might be able to ascend to "good" status after plentiful public remorse and penance.
