You... judge them? Really?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
... I could've sworn Growing the Beard meant becoming more mature. (Not necessarily Darker and Edgier, just... more mature.)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this one is meant for the thread under, yo.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're judging them because you think they have bad taste?

I don't think it's at all weird that people would go through and read old fics for inactive fandoms. I read old fics all the time, even for active fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I do that, too. That, and if I come across a fanfic author whose current works I enjoy, it's only natural I'd want to go back and see what else they've written.

I get why it can feel a bit awkward for people to come across your older works if you think they're not up to par, though, yeah. I love getting comments on my older fics, I'm glad people enjoy them, but that doesn't stop me looking at those fics and mentally nitpicking them all the same :p.

But it can also be a fun way to see how you've progressed and improved as an author since then, too. And getting encouragement on fics that you might not think are your best can still be a bit of a nice confidence boost in its own right :).

I judge them, too! Only I judge them to be nice, considerate reviewers who want to express their appreciation. :)

The same!

That's weird. Just because you've grown past the topic or fandom or fic, doesn't mean others aren't in that phase of their life. But also why be so weird about people liking your work? Who cares if it's old, it's all new to them.

Ugh. Shit like this is why I get paranoid about commenting or kudos or 'liking' fic.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you don't feel bad. Like the OP, I have older fics that people still leave the occasional comment or review on, and they always make smile. I'm no longer active in that fandom, but I'm glad that people still enjoy reading what I wrote, regardless of how I personally feel about the fics.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
ditto 100%

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Agh, I went through the "dark and edgy" phase when I started out writing fics. All the fandoms I wrote fics for are still very active and there are lots of great fics out there, so it really surprises me when someone comments on a fic I abandoned ten years ago and tells me to keep going. I don't judge those people though. I imagine they must be the same age I was when I started writing them and that makes me smile because they have their whole fandom lives ahead of them. Does my old writing makes me cringe? Of course. But I do appreciate their enthusiasm and think it's sweet.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-11 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be the odd man out and say I agree with you fully, OP. I have a fic that I'm super-embarrassed about from more than 15 years ago - literal self-insert - that still has fans who say they religiously re-read it and wish I had finished it. I'm not offended that people still like it but knowing how bad it was and how terrible of a person I was when I wrote it makes me seriously question their taste.

If it bothers you that much, why not delete it?

+1. I deleted a stupid over the top fic I never really was satisfied with even then and aaaallll my songfic (like 3 or 4 god I was that type of fan) and have no regrets. I still get views on the remaining things, 10+ years after they were all abandoned, so some people like reading 16 year olds' weird ramblings long after the canons end.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
What relation does the fic have to you being a terrible person at the time? Why do you think you were a terrible person even?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt
Because we live in a current climate that doesn't allow for nuance. Everyone is either "good" or "terrible" and if the terrible ones try really hard and are really lucky, they might be able to ascend to "good" status after plentiful public remorse and penance.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I went through a super dark and ~edgy~ phase with my teenage fic writing as well, and while I wouldn't necessarily say I judge the occasional person who comments positively on one of my old fics today, I do tend to imagine that they must be of a similar age and mindset to the age I was and mindset I had when I wrote it.

And I suppose if I found out the person was actually thirty, I'd be a little puzzled as to why they didn't recognize how poor the writing was and how immature the perspective was. So maybe I do judge a little?

OTOH, I know people who wrote fanfic at 15 that is legit pretty excellent, so I think it really depends on the writer.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like all the things that I like just because they're well-written. If that were the case, I wouldn't be reading fanfiction at all. Sometimes it can be fun to read or watch something that isn't objectively a work of genius, just because it has other redeeming qualities.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

It's sometimes surprising to see what fics 'work' for different readers ( often for different reasons).
