lol what #2

I don't normally reply to secrets that are filed in the "other" category, but it escapes me how this is not a secret. Is it the religious context? Anyway, warning, this is kind of teal deer, which is why I didn't put it in my first comment. And I'm thinking you're not a troll -- I've known people who thought like this :\

Honestly, it's my firm belief that a lot of what the Bible says about women "being submissive" is taken terribly out of context. Especially Paul's writings, seeing as how he was such a misogynistic jerk (in the Apocrypha, Peter had to reprimand him for some of the things he wrote, convenient they left that out, no? ty, Roman Catholic church?). A lot of it was incident-specific and not meant to be applied to all situations. The thing about women keeping quiet in church? It was because they were speaking up in what would be an inappropriate situation for anyone to speak up. Paul just apparently felt the need to single them out >>' If you're truly interested in what's said on the subject, one rather useful passage is the entirety of Proverbs 31.

I'm sure there are many others, plus there's some pretty kickass chicks in the Bible. Rehab (who was a prostitute), Deborah (female judge), Jael (killed an enemy commander in a pretty vicious way, winning a pretty huge victory for the Israelites), etc. Bravery seems to be praised in women, with the examples of the bleeding woman in the gospels, Esther, Mary, etc. This whole "submissive" idea seems to have been blown way out of context when it comes to a lot of New Testament writings :\

I predict that posting this non-anon is going to be the death of me, but I think it's more supportive to see a logged-in comment than an anonymous one.

A woman of valor who can find? She is more precious than rubies.

:)

I am not exactly a Biblical scholar, but my mom is an artist and did a series of wall hangings about powerful Biblical women when I was a kid. So I do remember that bit.

. . . hi, I actually come to be amused that after seven pages of comments we both (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/163142.html?thread=58495558#t58495558) decided to say this at once.

Ohhh~ I'd forgotten about that one!

Not a Biblical scholar either, but was brought up by two very much Christian (of the Protestant variety) parents who made sure I knew a good deal about it. I've since forgotten a lot of it, but as a very rebellious and tomboyish little girl, I made sure to commit to memory everything that had to do with how women could act ;D

I think you said it in much fewer words than I did ^^' I tend to ramble...

Well, you made an actual Biblical argument and I just went O HAY UR ALL MEAN. So I guess we've got both sides covered. :D

Haha, I've always been compelled to try to debate my point -- usually doesn't end so well because internets = srs bsns. I just figure that I'm usually talking to the OP, not the commenters (though there are days...), when I reply to a secret, so I'll give things that might help them.

Whereas I hate arguing with people, especially on the Internet-- I get all flustered and either forget my point or cede defeat from sheer intimidation.

This time it seemed worth the risk, though.

That usually is the end result for me, too, but I usually have a fairly... decent... premise. I just seem to always wind up debating topics that are very controversial, or topics that people are so firmly entrenched in that nothing short of rewriting history could change their mind on. Of course, I've learned a lot from arguments like that too, so it's not all for naught.

So, so, so agreed.
