One wrong move, and not only would he be going to Hell, he'd be dragging Sam into death with him.
And um, he nearly did drag Sammy to hell. Because he was a dumb ass. He did make all the wrong moves. And didn't listen to reason for Sam to get his super speshul awesome powers, so he went to hell, and Lilith went Xena Demon Princess on their asses. :/ I'm not hating on Dean, which you seem to think I do (cripes, I better do disclaimers now or something); his love for his family is one of the most dedicated and beautiful things about him. I -said- I felt more when Sammy died. And they had Dean acting like a dumb ass. Period. Jesus, just what crawled up your butt and died? I often wonder whether people are watching the show for the powerful devotion between two brothers... or excuses to jump on other people's very trivial opinions of a character's actions.

You shouldn't make assumptions.
I don't disagree that Sam's death was more touching. What I'm trying to say is that he had every right to be acting like that. He made a mistake, and didn't want Sam to pay more than he was already going to.
And since you replied, I'll ask once more - how did you want him to act?
There's no need for you to take things to a personal level, and if you're hoping that I'll do the same, sorry, darlin', I won't. It isn't all that serious, but the fact that I disagreed with you doesn't automatically make me into one of the raging lunatic fans. It simply means I disagreed with you, and that neither knocks down my level of maturity, nor does it mean I'm wrong. I also didn't say you were bashing Dean. I asked you what you thought he should be doing.

I actually can count on one hand - scratch that. I can't think of any other time I put forth an opinion about the show that hasn't been in my own private journal, for exactly that reason. I don't enjoy fighting over the show. But I was unaware that in a public forum such as this, we weren't allowed to disagree with someone else's opinion.

Word on all of your reasons. I too had some problems with the finale, but I thought Dean was well...Dean the whole way through. He couldn't have just stepped aside and let Sam go all 'super speshul', because, come on, everybody remembers the first season, right? And how batshit insane every psychic kid went? And how Dean possibly saw Sam's 'true' face at the beginning of the ep? If he had capitulated, I'm sure just as many people would be calling OOC and deus ex machina and possibly ragged at him for putting Sam in more danger.
And to the OP...if Sam had been the one in hell, we would have had a completly different season let alone season finale, which kinda indicates longer standing issues than Dean's reaction to/in hell. (I personally think Sam's going to have to go to hell to get Dean back.)
I didn't get a huge emotional jolt outta this season's finale, but then again, I barely felt a thing when Sam died. Dean pleading with Sam? Choked me up a little bit. But the only death that left me in tears on this show was John's. (Death just doesn't have the same sort of punch when the character comes back to life.)

I'll be very disappointed if/when Sam starts figuring out how to use his powers. I would love to see it happen for selfish reasons (because damn, that boy is hot when he's bad), but it just isn't our show, and that's not the Sam Winchester Dean's been fighting so hard to protect.
And as to the potential use of a deux ex machina, yes! I was worried they'd pull out the Colt or find a simple way to save Dean, or some brand new spell to keep Lilith down, and all I could think was that I'd rather have Dean go to hell than see them pull some ridiculous trick out of their butts to save the day. They've done that far too many times over the last 3 seasons, and it's a tired trick. I like thinking that Kripke and company research their MOTW and come up with "valid" ideas to destroy them, and every time they pulled out the Colt or some spell, it made me twitchy.
If Sam doesn't end up going to hell to get him back - if Dean ends up figuring a way out himself (which, knowing Dean's character, is pretty likely) - I'll be very disappointed. It's about time Sam redeems himself (if only for the sake of the character's mental state), and saves Dean for a change. I don't think they'd be able to live with each other if Sam's got to deal with knowing that not only was he unable to save Dean from going to hell in the first place, he couldn't find a way to get him out.
And yeah - I didn't shed many tears for the finale. I got upset hearing Sam's voice pleading with Lilith to stop (but you know I love me some Padalecki, and knowing that he thought of his dogs dying the last time he was made to cry...oh, ouch), but I only ever really cried my eyes out over WIAWSNB. Deaths don't get to me, for the same reason they don't bother you as much - we know they're contracted, we know they're coming back, so we don't stress.
(When I watched Buffy, I wasn't involved in fandom at all, had no idea what was going on, and "The Gift" had me in SOBS, lol, because I had no clue is she was coming back. Fandom ruins us for surprises, I think.)
