[Isabel Maru, Wonder Woman]

I actually briefly thought that she'd turn out to be Ares.
But I agree, she was cool. I think they did a good job making her weird and creepy without going OTT.

I was torn between her and the guy it turned out the be. Kind of wish it had been her, though. She has an awesome design in comparison.

I was torn between being disappointed she wasn't, and kind of glad they didn't fall into Female Superhero Must Only Have Female Villains. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DesignatedGirlFight

I'm not sure she was my favorite, but I did find her character really interesting.

OP

I wished they had done more with her with her and Netta.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Diana, but I would have been happy to sacrifice a minute or two of the scene in the hotsprings cave (and from the dress-shopping) for a bit more Netta, or some Maru backstory flashback.

Who's Netta?

I think that was Steve's secretary? Could be wrong.

It's Etta, not Netta.

I agree. That was one thing that I wanted: More character development for people who weren't Diana. I still enjoyed the movie, but it would have been better with more backstory for others.

There was a really good review on tor.com that, while being squeeful about the good stuff, was also forthright about the things that could have been better.

http://www.tor.com/2017/06/05/the-wonder-woman-movie-is-an-experience-thats-long-overdue/

And I really liked their suggestions.

Oh and I should mention that that review is VERY spoilery!

I'm not craving fic about any of the characters tbh and I liked them all, but as far as villains go I liked her, she was creepy without being too over the top and like the first anon I thought that she was going to be Ares at first.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
She would have made a better one. That was my big disappointment actually (the casting of Ares). Otherwise I really, really loved the movie and she was one of the reasons. I loved the ballroom scene with Trevor and Maru.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason I really liked the little giggle she shared with Ludendorff after they staged their coup. It's such a weird, small moment.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
i loved that moment too. I'm not normally interested in villains but I found her really compelling. Down to the performance I guess. I don't want to redeem her, but I wanted to know more.

Yes, I agree. I'm a big fan of villains who enjoy what they do. It makes them interesting to me. And she seems like a complex character with some trauma in her background, but one who revels in the destruction she creates. And that is interesting to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought that was bizarrely cute.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, she was terrific, and a great update to the comics character. By far the most interesting and weird of the non-Amazons!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want any fic, but I was fascinated by her. And I have lots of thoughts about how they handled her character, appearance (especially at the end where the mask blew away), etc.

But of course this movie was feminist and perfect in every way!!1! so I'll leave it at that.

i think this is the first villain in a superhero film (other than jessica jones) that i actually fund scary. like i was literally unnerved during her scenes.
