I disagree here if only because without any advertising at all, you simply wouldn't be aware of a lot of neat shit that exists. Like someone invents some awesome new thing that you can only get online that isn't in your local store, how do you find out about it?

On the other hand, pop up ads and spam and intrusive bullshit, I agree with you.

Sure. I guess really I mean less advertising as a concept, and more the development of sophisticated advertising techniques since the 1950s or so.
