Some older comedians do seem a lot more acerbic than the modern crop. Its a much more confrontational and aggressive style of comedy with little concern for the narratives that usually surround modern comedians routines. The older guys generally have little preamble and straight to the punchline and the statement they are making with it. It is a very different style of comedy they do.

I don't think this is actually true, though. Both those comedic styles existed in the past AND in the present. You're talking as though acerbic, confrontational comedy is something comedians no longer do. There are comedians who have that style right now. See: Frankie Boyle, Jimmy Carr, etc.
