Those people who you know are not jerks? You don't know that. All you know is that they haven't let the mask slip yet.

Same goes for younger comedians. And female comedians. They're all jerks. Every one of them. They all to a person hold some jerkish or outdated or """Wrong""" opinion.

My advise? You probably don't want to her it but I've stopped looking for people who aren't jerks, and just enjoy what makes me laugh.

Maybe OP's definition of "jerk" isn't "anyone who holds any opinion at all that OP disagrees with." Maybe they mean people who in general hold more opinions that OP disagrees with than ones OP agrees with (or can respect despite disagreement), or that they consistently act like jerks regardless of opinions.

I guess it's easier to argue with someone if you try to turn their opinion into some extreme, black-and-white thing, by implying that they consider anyone they disagree with on anything at all to be a jerk.

"My advise? You probably don't want to her it but I've stopped looking for people who aren't jerks, and just enjoy what makes me laugh."

That isn't "advice" (not "advise"), it's just what you do.

I guess the advice is that OP should do the same, but it sounds like the jerks might not actually make them laugh.

This is just... extraordinarily wrong-headed, in my mind. Because the fact that all humans are unable to live up to idealized standards does not imply that all people are equally jerks. There's still an enormous difference in what kind of person you are, and especially in how you try to live your life and how your being is reflected in the things you do, and for creators how that's reflected in your art. To say that everyone's a jerk and that's the end of it is just stupid head-in-the-sand stuff.

That's not to say that you should hold creators to an idealized standard, by any means, and it's every individual person's choice how they want to approach the question of how those ideals work in reality. But this kind of false equivocation is a complete distraction from any reasonable approach to that idea. Yeah, everyone's a jerk on some level, but that doesn't mean you can't cut someone off if someone is consciously and intentionally being a jerk, in a way that you personally find distasteful. Fucking ridiculous.

This is good advice.

Ehhhhhhhh.

It's not universally true but I think it definitely is statistically common enough to where it's a fair generalization.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
well, that sounds like an arbitrary place to draw a line

Going back and watching any old comedian stand up can be cringy with how much social outlook has changed.

Eddie Murphy can be hrk.

Even old Chris Rock can be awkward (though his outfits are hilariously bad and fun to just stare at).

I read an article that talked about female stand-up and this case- not aging with the shifting social norms. Apparently Sarah Silverman is a (maybe not good. Ok? decent?) example at adjusting with norms instead of just trying to power through them.

Chris Rock has gotten more offensive and less funny. Remember his grossly racist comments at the Oscars?

I hear ya. I don't watch comedy by women under 40 because I know I'm just gonna be preached to.

How many people do you think would be saying "If you don't like it, ignore it!" if you said you wanted them to change?

I don't really see what's wrong with your current course of action.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's a bit weird that some people are acting like op's doing something unreasonable.

Some older comedians do seem a lot more acerbic than the modern crop. Its a much more confrontational and aggressive style of comedy with little concern for the narratives that usually surround modern comedians routines. The older guys generally have little preamble and straight to the punchline and the statement they are making with it. It is a very different style of comedy they do.

I like this bit on Graham Norton where John Cleese makes a lazy sexist joke and Taylor Swift shuts him down.
