It's not just that they're unable to live up to perfect standards, it's that people are all unbelievable shitty at one point or another. They, every single one of them are guilty of ignorance, hate, pettiness, and spite that, if you judged them by their worst, would make them utterly unfit for any civilised society. Every single one of them. So I've tried to stop doing that. Whats that, Martin Freeman said something that makes him scum? Well damn, that just ruined my day... NOT.

People are far far too eager to latch on to the worst thing a person has said or done, and then use that to conclude they're someone not worth listening to, or enjoying the work of... that just seems dumb to me. It's not just that no-ones perfect, its that at times everyone is, for some period of time or other, straight up evil. This does not make them evil, or in any way different to every other person. the internet never seems to consider this. The internet would argue that this is Wrong headed.

I agree that people make it too much of an absolute thing. 100%, I think you have to look at it in context and on a case by case basis and all of that kind of thing. But that's exactly what you're not doing - you're going too far the other way and saying all of it's equal and none of it matters.

And then, the other two points are, one, I think it's particularly tricky when jerkishness shows up in someone's work, and I think that's reasonably common with comedians in particular.

And two, I want to point out that what OP was originally saying is somewhat orthogonal to what we're actually talking about now, because they seemed to be making a conscious generalization to guide them in finding the most enjoyable pieces of media that they can, which is a little different from the kind of moral argument we're making, and I want to make sure that distinction is clear.

I think "unbelievably shitty" is an exaggeration. I can't think of anything that any of my friends have done that's really so bad. I'm not saying they're perfect and I agree with the broader point that everyone has made mistakes and has opinions that don't fit the current perfect liberal ideal, but you have a much more negative view of humanity than I do.

Yeah.

Like, I don't think that the median human being is a jerk in the same way that Pol Pot and Pinochet were.

Ah, but if you're not TheWakoKid, then your mind is so rigid and black-and-white that YOU would think your friends were "unbelievably shitty" if you knew they had any opinions at all that they disagree with.

He's not saying all people ARE shitty, he's saying that they're all shitty according to the the OP's standards (which he decided on himself, without asking the OP).

No, Im saying that people are capable of moments of utter shittyness by their own standards. You never snapped at someone who didn't deserve it and then didn't feel bad about it untill hours later? You never had a vile thought pop into your head and think "Oh thank fuck I didn't say that out loud?" well some people do say it out loud. That doens't make them a bad person, but if you asked them, they would agree "Yes, I'm a shitty person for that". No-one considers themselves to be a decent human being all the time.
