Hmm... I was going to comment then you didn't get very far in, but then realized I only really remember Epona being necessary to access the Gerudo Fortress the first time.

She was the cutest.

You can actually finish the game without Epona, there are other ways to cross the broken bridge.

You can just hookshot across. Epona really isn't necessary for any part of the game at all. I knew someone who completed it without realizing you even could get Epona.

I remember I had to keep going back for weeks before I finally won that race. Don't feel bad, OP. They made that race really hard.

I didn't play this game when it was first out but early on when I was with my now husband we were long distance and I found being apart from him hard so needed stuff to occupy my time. He loaned me a few of his old consoles/games so I finally got to pop my Ocarina of Time cherry.

That FUCKING race nearly killed me. I didn't play the game for months because I couldn't beat it so I hardcore rage quit. Then I randomly decided to give it another go and spent about 90 minutes doing it over and over and over. You know who was an early-20something sobbing hysterically because she'd finally beaten part of a game that kids were doing with ease in the late 90s? Me. That's who!

I'd read guides and watched Youtube videos to try and figure out how to do it. The advice was to try and take the inside line as early as possible to block the other guy from blocking you. But he always managed to block me until that one time where I finally managed it.

Weirdly, I had no trouble with the water temple. It was boring and tedious but just involved a lot of backtracking. But then, I also didn't have any trouble finding my way around in the SNES Jurassic Park.

I feel like I'm bragging with that so just remember, I'm the one who can never get Epona.

Same, the race wasn't difficult at all for me.

Water temple, however, made me ragequit for a bit and that was WITH a walkthrough at hand.

This secret makes me sad.

I spent half that game just riding Epona around the fields. It was so calming for some reason.

Now I want to replay this game.

I was never able to beat that either, until Ocarina of Time 3d and gyroscope aiming (and even then it took... many tries)

That race is way too hard. I've seen too many tears shed over it.
