What twist in a series or movie actually surprised you?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-18 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by watching Final Destination 5 this weekend. I really should have seen that ending coming.

The second half of the fourth Space Dandy episode. The only creative thing I've seen done with zombies in years.

Yeah, the half has an even better banger to meh episodes than the first. Definitely worth finishing.

I totally did not see the twist in Atonement. It was so heartbreaking too. :(

The Others also had a pretty mind blowing twist!

The twist in The Prestige is still super powerful on rewatches.

I saw The Sixth Sense on its opening night. The ending shocked me, but apparently most people who saw the movie when I did still saw the ending coming, so I guess either I'm unusually dumb or a whole bunch of people are lying because they don't want to look dumb.

I think most of those people are lying.

I didn't see it in theaters, but I didn't know anything about it when I did see it. I was stunned by the twist.

I did see "The Village"'s twist a mile away though. ..or whatever that other movie by him was called, can't remember if that's it or not

Up until about three years ago, it was every Moffat twist that surprised me in his works. But only because they came out of nowhere with no set up and made no sense. They were surprising but not satisfactory. Now they just fill me with disappointment and sadness.

I can't remember the last time a "twist" with actual narrative set up surprised me though. Of course I don't really like being surprised with twists, so that is fine with me. I put my hate of twists down to the lack of a twist in the Story of Abraham and Isaac. The twist in that should have been Abraham refusing and that meaning he had passed the test. Instead to twist was he really was supposed to murder Isaac and God only let him off at the last second because he was pleased with the preparation to murder. That is where I think I learned to hate story twists. I think. Also where I learned to distrust religion.

Hm, passing a test by refusing to do what's asked of you because that was the real test is a pretty old twist itself by now. But I wonder if the Abraham and Isaac story, and other people having the same take on it as you did, had something to do with it becoming a popular twist initially.

You mean all the people going "whoa, Jehovah, not cool dude" made pop culture decide to come up with the "but it was all a secret test, dude, to see if you were brave enough to not do it". To see if you were brave enough to defy even god to do the right thing.

I'm just always annoyed that everybody ignores the fact that Isaac was a grown-ass man and CONSENTED to be sacrificed.
I mean it's fine to be horrified etc., carry on with being horrified, but he was not a child led to slaughter. He was 40.

That kinda makes it worse. That means they are in something that is one letter away from Piers Morgan. Did he at least get some koolaid first?

I think that's the only one in the Final Destination series I've seen but I don't remember it being a twist ending (I watched it on a roadtrip and was half distracted by the bus)

I tend to read a lot of books and see the movie adaptations in theaters and I'm amused by people's reactions since I know the ending generally. (Perks of Being a Wallflower; Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl; Before I Fall; Everything, Everything are ones that come to mind)

For Final Destination 5, the ending would probably only be a twist if you watched the first movie. The big disaster in the first movie was the plane crashing and the kids that are getting kicked off the plane are from that movie.

I read the book of Everything, Everything. I thought it might end that way and wasn't surprised. To tell the truth I didn't like the book that much, just because of plot holes.

I knew how Everything, Everything was going to end about halfway through the book, but I still genuinely enjoyed it.

Persona 5 spoilers--

Igor. It was glaringly obvious in hindsight, but I managed to somehow logic away my suspicions when I first started playing. I thought they used the voice actor's passing as a chance to retcon the character a bit or something.

Indigo Prophecy. Lucas is about to be arrested by the cops. Then he runs up a wall and starts dodging bullets like he's freaking Neo.

The ending to Ex Machina. Not that surprising in retrospect, but still.

Flint and Hamilton.

Maybe I've should've seen it coming after he acted like a dead fish in bed with Miranda.

I was expecting Elvira in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane to figure out what was going on and come to the rescue. So much for that.
