I think people are really two faced when complaining about toxic masculinity than mock guys for liking girly things. For example 'guy liking My Little Pony" complaints, which I take less seriously unless they're about a specific area of bad fan and not just "how dare they like this thing".

Also treating it like a novelty that MLP fandom can have bad parts or it's somehow extra bad because I've see girls being creepy fans for fucking years, including writing torture fics of female characters for being rivals to some slash OTP.

So I laugh in the faces of people who get all alarmist about MLP fandom and such NOW. Nobody really got concerned before.

I also really love/hate how a lot of the people who were so adamantly opposed to grown men getting into a little girls' show are now part of another little kids' show (Steven Universe) and are at least twice as toxic as Bronies ever were.

I know right. And they threw the most pissy of bitchfits because the guy who made Equestria Dailey wanted to make an SU site. They even TOLD people to be toxic to male fans. They just never stopped being toxic.

IIRC Lauren Faust never had to tell bronies it wasn't okay to push people to suicide

Sorry but MLP fandom was fucking terrible by any fandom standards, any other fandom that was as consistently bad as it should have been equally condemned, and saying that the only reason people had problems with bronies was because of toxic masculinity is basically revisionist history

The thing is I agree with your overall point about not mocking men for liking feminine things! But MLP is the worst fucking argument for that

nayrt but MLP was no worse than any super fandom. There are equally fucked up areas of fandom everywhere, and a lot of the MLP fandom was fairly sweet and PG.

The MLP fandom got lots of attention for its bad parts. That's not the same as having worse bad parts than anyone else. "guys liking feminine things" being a big deal probably had a lot to do with it too.

There might have been a role with the guys liking feminine things bit, but it's just not the fundamental cause the way you're presenting it. Just a bad example to use.

nayrt but do you have proof that MLP had a higher percentage of bad parts relative to its not-bad parts than any other comparable super fandom? Or is this just anecdotal?

Related, I think a lot of the 'stories' made up about bronies are false. Like the famous one where a parent claimed their 6 year old searched the words My Little Pony on google and the first result was porn and said child was traumatized and crying and couldn't stand to watch the show anymore.

1. Even assuming the parent didn't know to have safe search on, unless they were specifically searching pony porn it shouldn't have been the first thing that popped up.

2. What six year old recognizes cartoon sex and is traumatized by it? If true, the mom should be looking super-hard at any male relatives/friends who spend an inappropriate amount of time with the kid.

3. Almost every other cartoon fandom I know has a lot more problems with porn on the front page of google.

yeah seriously. Children are more likely to call the parent and ask "whats that?".

(thats what happened with my older brother discovering he could make girls kiss in Sims. We weren't allowed to play the game for YEARS after that. My mom still hates the games)
