I've not seen anyone saying that the punishment fit the crime. I have seen people saying it was stupid of him (or anyone) to go to North Korea. Like, if you visit a cult dictatorship of a country, you are going to risk being shipped to a concentration camp.

It's obviously a huge risk to go to North Korea. But you're a fucking asshole if your immediate response to hearing about his death is to victim blame.

I don't know or care about this guy. I don't know him or his family. I hope this serves as a lesson for other idiots who want to have a grand ol' time in NK. A time that funds the NK government and lines the pockets of a ruthless dictator.

I empathize with people I know and care about. Or living things who are defenseless (so children, animals, elderly). Not a teen who decided to have fun in fucking North Korea. It sucks, but what does one expect when they go to NK? There have been NUMEROUS stories in the past 5-7 years with people visiting being arrested and sentenced to hard labor.

So... you're just MOSTLY incapable of empathy and human decency. I see.

Eh, you are not going to make me feel bad because some adult decided it'd be fun to visit North Korea and then got arrested. I'll save my empathy for abused children, animals, and elderly.

I'm the conflicted anon in the thread below this. I can sympathize with him. NK is treated like a joke in lots of American media. People don't realize it's a thing that could happen to them. I'm angry about it, but in a sense it's also not entirely his fault when everybody laughs at it and thinks its a joke because it can't Actually Bomb America.

On the other hand, they were tourists taking selfies and vacationing in a capital of the dictatorship that killed family members of mine and I don't really have words for how distasteful I find that. I don't think he or anyone else in that group had much empathy for the Korean people there or their history.

I have a lot of feelings.

Let's not forget the money he spent touring there went to the NK government to perpetuate the same torture that he endured on other innocent people. All tourists who go there and give them money for the privilege of visiting the carefully maintained fake capitol are somewhat complicit in that, ignorant or not.

No, it's not the same as paying taxes to a government that takes military actions; that's not voluntary. Tours of NK are. It's not only "stupid" to go to NK, it's morally awful or at least morally awful through ignorance. Would you pay to go to a country if you knew the money would go to a regime full of concentration camps? These people did. Not because they're evil assholes. I doubt they thought about it at all, which is better and also worse in ways.

Does that deserve death and torture? Still no. But, the whole issue is more nuanced than "pure innocent cinnamon roll, how can anyone be mad?"

I'm a little confused by this, like I didn't say anything even remotely close to "pure innocent cinnamon roll". Yes he was an idiot for going there, I'm pretty sure basically everyone agrees with that, the point is that it's, well, not really the point, because he died. Like all the tut-tutting in the world doesn't matter now, his family is grieving, and "I told you so" is not a useful sentiment.
