The American imprisoned in NK and released in a coma has died.

I find it really sad that people:

A. Assume the poster story was true. (It was very possibly a coerced confession, and you can't tell whether that's him in the video.)

B. Think he got what he deserved if it was true. (Yes, if true, he made a mistake. But this was not a fit punishment.)

I've not seen anyone saying that the punishment fit the crime. I have seen people saying it was stupid of him (or anyone) to go to North Korea. Like, if you visit a cult dictatorship of a country, you are going to risk being shipped to a concentration camp.

I don't know or care about this guy. I don't know him or his family. I hope this serves as a lesson for other idiots who want to have a grand ol' time in NK. A time that funds the NK government and lines the pockets of a ruthless dictator.

I wonder why the tour company isn't getting more flack. They advertise NK as one of the safest places to visit in the world - even after this.

It is pretty safe if you follow tour instructions and do what the government handlers tell you. This guy went off the rez on his own though. Besides, it isn't like America's shit don't stink. Plenty of people have gone on holiday to America and come back in a body bag. My government is currently actively advising members of ethnic minorities and LGBT people not to travel to the United States unless completely necessary due tot he risk of being shot and killed by American police.

Yeah most people seem to assume the poster thing was true. The confession seems really odd to me and the video is definitely not proof of anything.

Either way, yeah. I have been paying a little attention to tankie posturing as a result of this and it's really gross.

I feel so bad for his family.

Anything that North Korea claims has a high chance of being a lie. I also don't give a shit if he did try to steal a fucking poster, he still in no way deserved what happened even if he took a shit on a Kim Jong Il statue.

agreed. it's a stupid thing to do but it doesn't deserve death, and the people I've seen saying either that 1. it does (tankies) or 2. he was asking for it (some tankies and apparently some people here) are really boggling my mind.

I got really emotional reading that he died, even though it was pretty clear from the initial reports that he wasn't going to get better. Seriously, he was a kid and who knows what the hell he endured before his brain checked out. Fuck anyone who acts like he deserved it, and seriously not the fucking time to reprimand him for going to North Korea. I wish his family peace in what must be the worst grieving process imaginable.

To start it off, I do not think anyone, regardless of anything, deserves the treatment he got or what happened to him.

But at the same time, I can't help but be angry about it. He's an oblivious American guy going happily touring and taking selfies in an oppressive, murderous dictatorship that murdered 1/4 of our family in the 1950s like it ain't no thing and it's nbd. I hope you can see why my reaction is conflicted.

I love how when this happens "it's not the time" to talk frankly about why it happened but whenever there's a big deadly shooting gun-rights activists get blasted whenever they say the face of tragedy isn't the time to talk about gun control.

Like, I think guns should be regulated to hell and back but the hypocrisy of these situations is astounding.

I don't think anyone deserves what happened to him, but I do think people need to be way more aware that NK is a dangerous place. Too many people think that NK is a harmless joke. It is not.

I feel really bad for the poor kid and his family. I'd read about his condition and knew it was pretty much hopeless, but I was still kinda hoping something miraculous would happen and he'd pull through. Yes, North Korea's a dangerous place and I personally wouldn't go because they treat their citizens horrendously, but no one deserves that.

Even if the poster story was true, fifteen years hard labor? What the hell is that?

I do feel like maybe the US doesn't put enough emphasis on how dangerous it can be to be American (or any outsider) in certain parts of the world and that there are definitely places you should not go.

I can excuse people thinking the poster story is true in the absence of additional details because, frankly, trying to steal a propaganda poster for a souvenir sounds exactly like the kind of thing some people would do. Up until today, I hadn't read anything that provided any elaboration. The part about him being pulled aside as he was leaving the country or that he was accused of stealing it to harm people's work ethic casts it in a different light.

Anyone who thinks he (or anyone) deserved 15 years hard labor and/or to die is an idiot.
