To be fair, I don't think Eowyn was aiming for 'graceful yet deadly', I think she was aiming for 'kill them very dead before they destroy any more of my family'. Also, she's human, not elven, grace is less of a thing for her.

Yeah I'm not sure why Eowyn ought to have been graceful, really

But then again I hated most of the visual aesthetic of the movies full stop so

Huh. Because you would've preferred a different look? Like what? Or for some other reason?

I don't want to be like there's only one correct way to do it. I don't know exactly how I would have done, I just don't like the way that the movies did it. Mostly, I think that the colors were really wan, and I don't like a lot of the sets / scenery / design for stuff (outside of the Shire which is mostly good). Everything looks like it's basically one single room in the middle of an endless field.

Also: at this point, it's really hard to talk about aesthetics in nerd movies without falling into thought-terminating cliches. So that's the other thing, I don't want to pretend that there's an easy answer here and that I know it. I just don't like it. It's passable when the characters are outdoors, although even then it's not great to me. But especially Rivendell and Edoras, and to a lesser extent Gondor and Mordor, all feel equally barren and uninteresting and pointless and hollow.

Well, Eowyn wasn't graceful, for sure. I'm not sure she was "kill them dead first" either. All of her swordplay scenes looked really awkward, like she had no idea which end was sharp.

This. Eowyn is not an elf. Why would you assume grace was part of the equation in that scene?

Are you under the impression that human sword fighting has to look awkward and clumsy? Bob Anderson would disagree with you, if he were still alive.

No, of course not. But I wouldn't expect Eowyn to look the way an elf does with a sword. And given her character, awkward makes sense to me? Her discomfort with herself and her issues and conflicting desires I think could manifest in how she uses a sword. Not to say that I think the move version was perfect. But I don't think it was quite as bad as this thread is saying.

I think there's a lot of middle ground between "looking clumsy with a sword" and "looking like an elf with a sword". I wouldn't expect Eowyn to fight like an elf, but I'd expect her to demonstrate a certain level of competency and ease of movement and comfort with sword handling that's comparable to the rest of her people. Your theory is interesting, but it doesn't work for me because then someone who's awkward and uncomfortable with a sword really doesn't have any business going into battle, and that doesn't fit with Eowyn's character and the rightness of her choice to be there, IMO.

I guess I just don't think she looked that awkward. A bit yes. But Miranda captured so many other parts of the character that it didn't bother me? I can't think of another actress who I think would have done a better job.
