It's also used for sorting because some big pre-Ao3 fandoms have a lot of fic there, but not on Ao3. I know there was drama a couple years ago when I think it was Stargate Atlantis got into Yuletide as a tiny fandom, because all the fic for it was ff.net or other websites.

With 760,000+ HP fics on FF.net vs. 140,000+ on AO3, that might just be true. *g*
