things that don't hold up

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
any favourites from your childhood, a band that you used to be obsessed with, a book you worshipped that just did not hold up when you revisited them?

my first manga ever was magic knight rayearth and i adored it and remember drawing blatant copy cat stories of my own magical girls and even in later years i had the impression that it was a nice series.

but the writing is so juvenile and really really forced. i only re-read one and two and im. already ticked off by the breakneck speed relationships are formed.

The Dark Crystal

It's so long and slow and boring. :(

Still really cool looking and I will always love it from my childhood obsession, but I've tried to watch it twice as an adult and didn't make it all the way through.

I still love it but yeah, it's very slow and not terribly exciting. The puppetry is fucking amazing though and I'll always love the aesthetic of the Skesis.

Oh no! I actually have a couple of her books on my shelf. I've not reread them since I was in like the 10th grade.

I felt the same way about the Magic Knight Rayearth manga. The anime, on the other hand, held up amazingly. I re-watch it a lot.

I should say, the plot and characterization holds up. I do cringe at how many still shots there are in the action scenes, after being used to seeing so much movement in animated fight sequences in more current anime.

Well, it's a manga for young girls so if you liked it back then when you were the intended audience, I say it's good and it did its job very well.

The Pokemon TV show. I tried rewatching it with my nephew and it is just awful.

I've heard this a lot so I've never rewatched it. I'll stick to the awesome version I remember in my head.

My cousin's really into Pokemon and, at first, I was really excited because I thought I'd get to watch something I actually liked while babysitting him, but it's just . . . not good. I could see why I liked it when I was a kid, but it's really terrible as an adult. At least Digimon's still good.

Huh. I guess it's true that your impression of it changes. I rewatched it about 2 years ago and was surprised to find it was hilarious.

The Sun and Moon anime is good, imo. Then again, I'm watching it with subs...

The ORIGINAL Pokemon anime, I honestly haven't watched in years. If I do, I'll probably use subs just to see how different it was from what I watched as a kid. I do remember that it was pretty hammy.

Fruits Basket

(Anonymous) 2017-06-21 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously loved Fruits Basket when I was younger. I saved up my allowance to buy all the volumes and wanted to buy the anime, but it was really expensive and I never purchased it. I recently reread the manga and, while it's not terrible or anything, I just wasn't into it anymore. I'm not even sure why. I saw Funimation was releasing the anime on Blu-ray and I felt weirdly sad that, now that I can afford it, I'm not interested in it anymore.

I remember the Angry Beavers being hilarious when I was a kid. As an adult...I don't think it's particularly good.

I was too old when I read MKR, so I was annoyed by it from the get-go :/

For myself: The Pokémon anime. It was my gateway drug and all, but going back to watch the first season, I honestly wonder why so many grown-ups could be SO into the fandom that they'd re-watch each episode several times.

Xanth, and specifically, Castle Roogna. I loved that book so much when I was a kid, probably read it tens of times. Then I got older, revisited, and......holy skeevetown, Piers Anthony. I will never touch his work again.
Still can't bring myself to throw away the books, though.

There's a lot of manga from my teens that I don't want to revisit, for exactly that reason. I'm afraid I won't love it, and that it'll kind of ruin it for me.

Which one had the spider? I thought that was a neat character when I was a kid.

Mercedes Lackey. It made a big impression on me back in the day, but now it just reads like cheezy fanfiction for something else.

Ha!

I recently started reading her, and while I agree it's kind of cheesy -- I enjoy it terribly!

Princess Bride. Sorry, but just, the blatant sexism makes me wince now. I know it is probably intentional and meant to be funny. But the Wesley slapping Buttercup part still makes me uncomfortable every time.

Harry Potter has gone way down in my estimation. I still love parts of it, and I still like reading fics. But I honestly prefer fics to the books a lot of the time because there are so many things about the world that just don't make sense or don't work.

I feel awful saying this, but Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I still love the radio show I couldn't get past the first few pages of the book. But I can't admit it because a) they're not that different so it doesn't make sense and b)Douglas Adams fans will want to kill me.

Land of the Lost. When I watched it as a young kid I thought it was kind of cool and mysterious. I didn't expect to enjoy it the same way as an adult but I didn't expect to be shocked by how utterly crappy everything about it was.

Anne of Green Gables. It made me very sad that I couldn't go back to how I felt about it when I was a young girl. Anne just annoyed me, she never stopped yapping.
