It's way simpler than that. It's cool to hate Benedict Cumberbatch. That's literally it.

Or maybe some people just didn't like the movie, anon.

Oh, some people, for sure. But there's certainly a component of "we're supposed to hate BC" I've seen that had people reaming it from the very start. Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, too, though she seems to get more the "I'm not mad I'm just disappointed" treatment.

So what you're saying is that it being cool to hate Benedict Cumberbatch is not, in fact, literally it

Aaah, fine, fine, I know, "literally" used as hyperbole is lazy and I shouldn't have done it. It's certainly a large part of it, though!

literally has been used since Shakespeare's time to exaggerate and is very difficult to mistake for its other use within context

I am utterly Cumberbatch agnostic, paid to see the movie because I go to see all Marvel movies out of some weird mass hypnosis I haven't been able to shake. I found the film an underwhelming mishmosh. I rank it as dead last. Maybe tied with Ant Man? The whole faux-Inception thing was yawn-worthy. I can't even remember the plot now.

The only bit I enjoyed was the interlude with the cape. That was hilarious. I totally ship Dr. Strange/Cape.
