(Doctor Strange)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I am extremely dubious that that's the case

Same.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie was shit.

Also, doesn't tumblr hate cumberbatch for some reason now? Is he evil? Or was Strange supposed to be non white? I can't keep up with their tortured little souls.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
People in fandom have varying opinions about Cumberbatch for reasons that should be obvious. The social justice thing with Doctor Strange, for the people who cared about it, was casting Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The Ancient One was cast as a female Celtic druid instead of an old Tibetan man, was the primary reason. But, yes, since Cumberbatch got married and his wife started having kids, certain portions of fandom turned on him for not fulfilling their gay fantasies.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
He's done some stupid shit but none of it seems to be why people hate him now.

People have been up on the movie because of a different character no longer being Tibetan, and they blame it in Hollywood whitewashing instead of the root being how China won't show any movie that recognizes Tibet.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Your logic escapes me. Please elaborate.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's way simpler than that. It's cool to hate Benedict Cumberbatch. That's literally it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe some people just didn't like the movie, anon.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I never signed up.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-21 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could do the same. It makes me depressed most of the time but tumblr and twitter are the only places my fandoms are active so I'm trapped until I get tired of it. Both are shit. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I have my complaints about Tumblr. But the way this forum is turning "Tumblr" into a byword for "everything terrible" is getting super irritating.

Can't speak to the fandom, but as someone disabled, I loved the depiction of disability in this movie. It was realistic without being depressing, and Dr. Strange had a really good arc where he learned to accept his hands as they are and find meaning in other things. Yeah, I thought it was awesome, pretty much.

People don't like Doctor Strange because people are finally tired of Cumberbatch.
Duh. Thought that was obvious.

I thought it was the cultural appropriation of Asian cultures and white-washing of the Ancient One?

I didn't even know there were any disabled characters in the movie, only that there was at least one white actor playing an Asian character, and the trailer didn't pique my interest, so I didn't see it.

Personally I disliked the movie from the git-go because of Marvel's: "Oh no, Cumberbatch is here for a completely different reason" and then the next day: "KIDDING HE'S THE STAR OF THE MOVIE AREN'T YOU EXCITED??" Bullshit pull.

Also I'm one of the people who never liked him to start with (I say, knowing full well I sound like some kind of fandom hipster) and I dislike the fact that both he and Mads keep getting cast in things I would otherwise like, so I had even less reason to go see the movie.

idk about the ppl on your side of tumblr op, but the people I follow mostly just refused to see it cause of the whole white-washing controversy. So... not so much.

All these comments, and no one mentions the possibility that the lack of fandom interest is because there's not a second reasonably attractive white guy you could conceivably ship him with?

(If Mordo had been played by a white actor, you know fandom would have been ALL OVER THAT.)

Actually, my problem with the movie IS the "magic cure". He "found magic" waaaaay too easy and fast. I mean sure, I've heard the theory that there's time magic going on and he actually spent years training, but dude walked into a back alley and learned that magic was real and he could learn it. It sounded like ANYONE could learn it. Couple scenes later he's good enough at it to beat another master at it while others died. I mean, what?

It's not like I want more scenes of a guy being tortured by his ~soul~. But there must be SOME way to depict him finding magic as actually difficult and soul-wrenching. This movie didn't do it.

Not the racism? Or the Bechdel test fail? Or general dickishness?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-22 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
You sure it's not the racism? Really sure?

You're also positive it wasn't the way that he went somewhere to be trained in a skill, violated all the training methods and rules, and was rewarded for it?

Or the fact that the two speaking rolls for women revolved around their relationship to men? (Rachel McAdams with Strange, The Ancient One and her Student) and also we never ever ever saw two women, talk to each other, about something other than a man?

You are certain it has nothing to do with the fact that what WOULD have been the super great slash pairing became straight up enemies?

Personally - I didn't mind that he was an asshole when he was in messy, painful, horrific places mentally and physically. That's normal. That's honest. That was one of the few great things that Dr. Strange did - depict a true reaction to physical disability that cannot be recovered from. What I minded that he was an asshole no matter what, all the time, in all ways and all things - before during and after.
