Not a big deal, but I don't understand why "Before You Follow" pages have become such a big thing. If someone wants to follow your public blog, a lot of the time a "do not follow if you do/are thing" isn't going to deter them. I mean, I know sometimes it must be meant as a "this is where the owner of the blog stands on [issue] thing", but still.

Yeah, I think they're kinda dumb. I also don't get why they're so against terfs or neo-nazis following them. (Do neonazis even exist on tumblr? I've yet to encounter one.) Seeing and understanding why someone has different viewpoints than myself is literally the only reason I've changed any of my political opinions.

There's certainly alt-right people on Tumblr. Not sure how rigorous you care to be about the distinction between alt-right and neo-Nazi.

Seeing and understanding why someone has different viewpoints than myself is literally the only reason I've changed any of my political opinions.

I agree with this in principle. But, one, you still have the right to choose the time and place to engage with those ideas. You're not required to deal with peoples' political opinions at all times. You can be on Tumblr and decide that you don't want to deal with those issues in that specific venue.

Two, I think there comes a point where you have - for all practical purposes - rejected a point of view, where you've genuinely engaged with the arguments and heard them in depth and you just don't agree. And that also influences it a lot.

So, even agreeing with you on principle, I think it still makes sense to try to define your own space in specific mediums. Of course, as cbarycharnos is going to point out, Tumblr is extraordinarily bad at actually letting you do that, but still.

Well said.

Sure, but just having neonazis or whatever following you doesn't mean that they'll engage politically with you. I get if they're wanting to debate you but just the act of following doesn't mean that they'll engage with you.

But yeah, I suppose that tumblr and a lot of social media makes it difficult to divide the line between public and private and can often make what you want to be a conversation between friends and like minded people, one between total strangers.

There are definitely neo-nazis on tumblr. I know Jewish people who have been harassed by them.

I once encountered a Hitler fanpage on tumblr. It wasn't someone's very bad joke either, it was dead serious.

Two trends on tumblr I hate.

Trans characters are either fetishized as basically being crossdressing cis people, with dudes having huge hips and boobs and of course every lady's got a mighty penis and looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in a dress. OR they're post-up with scars that look like the surgeon used a lawnmower.

The whole Muggle > Wizards Harry Potter fandom that's always about how much better muggle stuff is to wizard stuff. Harry should have used scuba gear instead of gillyweed! A pencil is like a quill only it never drips or needs dipping and it doesn't look stupid. Harry could have just had someone else put his name in the Goblet of Fire because wizards only enchanted it against magic tampering, not clever muggle workarounds.

I'm just so 110% done with how cool and hipster it is to hate magic.
