(Anonymous) 2017-06-21 12:30 am (UTC)(link)Seeing and understanding why someone has different viewpoints than myself is literally the only reason I've changed any of my political opinions.
I agree with this in principle. But, one, you still have the right to choose the time and place to engage with those ideas. You're not required to deal with peoples' political opinions at all times. You can be on Tumblr and decide that you don't want to deal with those issues in that specific venue.
Two, I think there comes a point where you have - for all practical purposes - rejected a point of view, where you've genuinely engaged with the arguments and heard them in depth and you just don't agree. And that also influences it a lot.
So, even agreeing with you on principle, I think it still makes sense to try to define your own space in specific mediums. Of course, as cbarycharnos is going to point out, Tumblr is extraordinarily bad at actually letting you do that, but still.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-21 12:42 am (UTC)(link)But yeah, I suppose that tumblr and a lot of social media makes it difficult to divide the line between public and private and can often make what you want to be a conversation between friends and like minded people, one between total strangers.
