Part of it has to do with the movie version of Ron's character where he doesn't really do anything or contribute anything to the trio, and his best lines are even sometimes given to Hermione. :/ A lot of people identify with Hermione, and find it insulting to have her end up with someone so untalented, unmotivated, and mediocre as movie!Ron, which I can understand.

That said, abusive/Death Eater!Ron headcanon existed in fandom early, before the movies had had that much influence, so it obviously can't be pinned entirely on the movies. I actually always thought a "Ron goes legit dark" (not just tempted but joins the Dark Side and fights against Harry) storyline would be super fun and interesting to explore in fanfic (there's lots to draw on in canon like his jealousy and insecurity), but I never got people who were actually convinced he was abusive or that JKR was planning on that direction for him. Were we reading the same books? Did people miss all the interviews where JKR said she based Ron on one of her closest friends? Or that she was obviously angling for Ron/Hermione as end game since Book 1? Ah well.

weren't there also interviews after the books where jk said that with hindsight she got it wrong and that ron/hermione would end up stuck in marriage counselling (at best)

(always wondered if that was a sign that jk and said friend had some sort of falling out)
