Re: What is something you NEVER buy a knockoff brand of?

Batteries (cheap ones run out quick), canned tomato soup (only Heinz), baked beans (only SPC - I even hate Heinz because the sauce tastes like the aforementioned tomato soup and that's not baked bean sauce to me), spicy chicken wings and blue cheese (I tried Aldi's soft blue cheese but it's milder than Castello), chicken stock powder (amusingly my brand, Massel, is a vegan one, so no actual dried chicken in it), toilet paper and tissues (brands differ in feel), rosehip or other fruit teas, Trident Thai Noodle Soup (it's the only dry soup pack like it).

Also milk, but that is because when there was a kerfuffle about dairy farmers getting undercut, I switched to a name brand and the brand I switched to is NORCO, the local brand of my childhood home town. I keep buying to support a company I have strong sentimental ties to and also know produce good milk.

I had never heard of Massel before but I googled it and I think I need some in my life.

I suspect it is an Australian company, so I don't know how much it gets sold abroad, and it doesn't strike me as the sort of stuff that would turn up in an Australian Food store in the USA, because it's just a soup stock brand. You may be able to research online purchase of a box of it though.

I personally think it is amazing in flavour, even though I am not a vegetarian by any measure.

They apparently sell it in some stores near me but not close enough for me to get to. (I'm in Southern California and vegetarian/vegan food is big here.) But it looks like I can order it online and I just might.

I am vegetarian but not vegan. I like the veggie stock I make OK mixed into things but it's not good with matzo balls.

Well I hope investigating Massel turns out well for you.

There's a kind of pricey vegetarian (or maybe vegan idk) chicken substitute broth that comes in cartons, it's actually called "No Chicken" broth, and the brand is Imagine. I use it when I'm too lazy to make homemade stock or I want something to taste especially chickeny. mVery occasionally, I've found Better Than Bouillon, which makes concentrated stock pastes in little jars, in a Vegetarian Chicken flavor, but it's even harder to find than the No Chicken stuff. I'm in SoCal too, but I don't know where exactly you are, around here I mostly find the No Chicken broth at Sprouts, Jimbos, and the local co-op, but I'd bet Whole Foods probably carries it.

Ah-ha, just checked Amazon, they carry the Better Than Bouillon paste, although it's about double what I've paid for it in stores.

Thank you! I will check it out. I think I have seen Better Than Bouillon in the store.
