I don't know if it's making more people stupid or we're just meeting all the stupid people we never could before.

And honestly in cases like this I 100% believe that the people in question don't actually buy the argument, they're just grabbing at any ammo they can to make it more 'legit' so they can have some faux moral highground(instead of admitting that it's a dumb ship/headcanon war).

I agree with you about their base motivation, but from what I've seen, some people in fandom have a truly remarkable ability to buy into their own BS when their emotions are invested in doing so.
