I 100% believe that the people in question don't actually buy the argument, they're just grabbing at any ammo they can to make it more 'legit' so they can have some faux moral highground

I agree with you about their base motivation, but from what I've seen, some people in fandom have a truly remarkable ability to buy into their own BS when their emotions are invested in doing so.
