I'm still waiting for someone to prove to me that Japanese gay men are head over heels for this show. Or at least some recognition from a Japanese newspaper or something. It can't be that hard if Japanese gay men love this show as much as the fans claim. Otherwise I'll keep on believing that in Japan regarding representation this is just another fujobait show.

Let me repeat it for the 10th time as it seems reading comprehension isn't your strong point, I never said they despised it (some aren't happy with it but that's inevitable, there will always be haters), only that the majority don't care. You're the one who argued that they loved it but was never able to prove it.

The last time someone posted a link of an interview of a Japanese guy (because of course only guys have the last word on whether something deserves recognition - and this time the Japanese part because someone like Weir loving this show doesn't count as anything) who is... an activist, I think? it got ignored, so I'm pretty sure no one will waste their time with proofs that'll be ignored once again.

No, Weir doesn't count when discussing Japanese men. Why would he. And one guy is nice and all, but again, it's just one person, love it or hsteate it, it cannot be extrapolated to the rest of the community.

Aaaand another strawman. And I'm the unreasonable one here, right. But I'm feeling generous today so I'll take the bait.

If you wanted to prove that Western men think YOI is great LGBT media you could easily list dozens of blogs, Tumblr, articles, Tweets, forums, etc. praising the show for its gay representation because Western men loved it,the proof is there, google it and you have dozens of results. It's easy.

Now, can you do the same with Japanese men? I doubt it. What I'd like to see is dozens of Japanese folks saying how great they think the show is. I don't think extrapolating one guy's opinion to everyone else is right, sue me.

I remember someone posted one blog link of a gay man critiquing YOI and had like, 5 comments in total (and some of them telling him the lack of realism [aka homophobia and suffering] wasn't necessarily a bad thing). Everything else has been "my friends," "people I know," or vague generalizations based on ~superior cultural knowledge~

But the thing is... the LGBT community (in Japan or anywhere else) is not one homogenized community, so anyone who wants one example of one or the other can find it if they search hard enough.

It's just not worth doing it here to see any common points, because our usual troll doesn't care about anything that proves them wrong and even one lone post with three comments that supports their views is a gospel of truth for them.
