The 2011 version?! I really liked it. It definitely had a twisty, recondite plot so I can get why it might be a bit boring but I really loved the style of it.

Boring and confusing. This is a pretty common opinion.

OP, I'm sorry you missed out on appreciating the heart-rending tragedy of the relationship between

Bill Haydon and Jim Prideaux

.

I didn't think it was that boring, but I guess it moves at kind of a... relaxed pace? I saw it in the theater, so I was a captive audience and just had to roll with it. I recall, though, that you do need to pay attention to get what is going on, but the movie doesn't make a huge deal of which bits you should pay attention to, so it was kind of confusing and I had to check it out from the library a while later and watch it again just to better understand what was going on.

OMG I was so bored by it too, OP.

I feel like it's very analogous to a chess game. Like, chess games can be very interesting, but, for the most part, if someone asked if you wanted to watch a slow-play game, most people would take a pass.

I'm sorry, but my first reaction to seeing statments like this is always automatically - you probably don't watch a lot of movies... ;)

Well, it's kinda typical for John le Carre stuff, I guess? Slow paced, lots of dialogue and silence, intelligent build up to a finale with very little violence. It's a bit of a difference to all those action driven movies we've become so used to, so yeah, it can appear a bit boring.

Aw man, this is in my top 10 films of all time. It's pretty impeccable, but I do appreciate it's not for everyone :(

In that case, you definitely shouldn't watch the BBC miniseries.

(But people who enjoyed the film should, because it's great, all 315 minutes of it, and has Alec Guiness being superb as Smiley).

Agreed with you on this.
