Denying evil is just about the easiest thing in the world for human beings to do.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." - Edmund Burke

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And Edmund Burke's a good example

Marie Antoinette worshipping motherfucker

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You think she's evil or...?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? It's always been pretty hard for me to do that.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on being uncommon.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think most of us would like to think that

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that shocking that a person's friends, family, and associates who haven't known them to do anything shitty would defend them. I'm not happy about it, but I'm not shocked.

Yup, actually that's a very common defense mechanism of people who do shitty things: be complete angels around everyone they aren't being shitty to, so they can play the 'but I'm SO NICE and would NEVER do X thing!' deniability card until the cows come home. It makes it that much harder for the victims to find support, and thus shitty people are able to get away with doing shitty things for years or decades or their entire lives.

Are you denying her the agency to have her own beliefs and make her own assessment of the facts as she knows them?

Shame on you.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, I strongly doubt that you're making this argument in good faith

Second, I read OP as saying that her judgment and assessment of the facts is both incorrect, and unjustifiable for any reasonable and informed person. and that's a valid opinion to come to. disagreeing with someone is not the same as denying their agency.

The secret says innocent until proven guilty, a hallmark of the American justice system is an excuse. The secret maker has tried and convicted Bill Cosby, something a jury of his peers could not do. The secret maker is being judgemental about someone who doesn't hold their beliefs. The secret maker doesn't have the moral high ground here.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Legal and moral judgment are not the same. And trying to defend something like this as "being judgmental about someone who doesn't hold their beliefs" is laughable. There are all kinds of beliefs that it makes sense to judge someone for.

Honestly, I really hope that you stop doing this sort of thing. It's just so lame and it brings everyone down.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Expressing dislike or criticism =/= denying someone agency

Nice try, though.

I've brought this up before. I noticed periodically on his 80s show there would be these young actresses who weren't very good and tended to play characters who had no personality and were just sort of there as plot devices. They even tended to be the same physical type (very light skinned thin Black women). I can't help wondering if these were women he had victimized and then put on his show to buy their silence.

Pretty but blank female occasional characters was just standard 80s tv fare.

I didn't say pretty but you have a point.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting analysis. I hadn't thought of that before, but I'd bet it's a possibility.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Unfortunately the whole story of "rapists are MONSTERS and EVIL and THE WORST" also means that when somebody among your family or friends is accused of rape (and false rape accusations are extraordinarily low, so they probably did it) your first instinct is often to say, "No, X isn't a monster, he's a great person". And rapists feel the same way - as long as they're not lurking in an alley attacking strangers, it's not really "rape", is it? Because they're a good person, not a monster.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
But that story isn't actually wrong. They are monsters. Human beings are just really bad at accepting that people they perceive as normal are aftially monsters.
