Fandoms/works that FS recced you that you DIDN'T like?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
We once had a thread for stuff you learned about from FS that you ended up liking, but I don't think we had a thread about stuff you watched/read because someone on FS recced it, but you didn't care for it. What didn't you enjoy?

I was recced books by Guy Gavriel Kay. I hated his writing. I turned the book back into the library after 8 chapters. If at that point I have zero reason to be invested in the main character - or even like him - then no thanks. IDK why of all the books I've just been "meh, this isn't doing it for me" I have such a vitriolic dislike of him in particular.

I don't hate his writing, but it's not for me. It's very... dense stuff, IMO. The world building is interesting but the plots and characters don't interest me enough to sustain works of that length.

And this comment has suddenly made me interested. Epic worldbuilding is my thing. Is he similar to Tolkien in that way? I honestly don't mind if the plot isn't as interesting to me if the worldbuilding is fleshed out enough so I can immerse myself in the world.

I'm surprised you didn't know him already, but he was specifically chosen by Christopher Tolkien to assist in editing The Silmarillion. His specialty is fantasy worlds that bear a strong resemblance to real historical periods, like renaissance Italy or medieval Spain.

Yuri on Ice. Honestly, I should not even have to explain this.

I didn't try it because of FS but I didn't make it past the first episode. One of my best friends loved it - to each their own I guess.

Most of them but it's not them, it's me. The reason I like series I do like is often really meta or has to do with some particular dynamic, and "if you like X then you'll like Y because they're the same broad genre" never works for that reason, but getting into why I like the series I like would take way too long and be far too particular and demanding a request. So I don't ask.

Re: Fandoms/works that FS recced you that you DIDN'T like?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Too many things to count. Mainly because I ask for X and the responders just shove in their favorite stuff without regard as to whether it is in any way similar to the thing I was asking recs for. Especially when I say no deconstructions and get stuff which is basically overhyped deconstructions or chock full of tedious twists. I honestly do not know why people do this.

Re: Fandoms/works that FS recced you that you DIDN'T like?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
People have different ideas about what exactly constitutes "deconstruction"? I mean, I don't know how specific you were, but that alone sounds like it could be a bit broad.

I think someone here recced Continuum? It is still on my computer, but I couldn't make it through the first episode. Just seemed dull. Same thing with Person of Interest.

I'll be honest - I had high hopes for Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Wimsey series, but it wasn't my thing especially once Harriet Vane enters the series. He's just so... weirdly and frankly rather creepily obsessed with a woman he barely knows and who made it clear she's not interested but somehow it works out in the end for him? Nah.

Ironically, I liked "Gaudy Night" with Harriet as the protagonist and Wimsey as side character better.

Gaudy Night was a good book. I liked some of the others but "somehow it works out in the end for him" (because he's so awesome) is kind of how they all go and it got boring for me after a while.

Re: Fandoms/works that FS recced you that you DIDN'T like?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's the part I didn't enjoy as much. It doesn't seem like there are as many interesting obstacles for Wimsey either in detective work or his love life. He's the hero of course, and will win in the end. But I was a bit bored by the journey.

I think it works for me in large part because I don't think she does say she's not interested in him. I think she says she's interested in him but doesn't want to get married. But it's a thin line to walk and I totally get not digging it.

Re: Fandoms/works that FS recced you that you DIDN'T like?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
To me it seemed like more than just a disinclination to marry, particularly at first. She doesn't even KNOW Wimsey, aside from hearing about his exploits as a detective. Wimsey proposes marriage the first time he meets her in person, when she's in prison. At the end of "Strong Poison", he continues to express his intent to marry her, even though she hasn't even consented to a romantic relationship of any kind with him, which... yikes.

Obviously she changes her mind eventually, but it didn't feel at all like a natural, healthy progression of a relationship. It felt like a "this works out because he's the hero of the series" wrap-up.

I still haven't made it through the first book, although I intend to eventually. She was always advertised to me as much more intellectual than Agatha Christie for example and a much better writer than the usual crime authors. So far I don't see it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The first book is a little lighter and less well done than the rest, but it also just might not be your thing.

Re: Fandoms/works that FS recced you that you DIDN'T like?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I'm not a huge Agatha Christie fan, so I was hoping for plots more substantial than that... I don't think the Wimsey series quite fit that description for me.

A lot of horror movies. Especially Antichrist. I asked for no gore.

Yeah... I generally google all recs before watching but reccing gore when "psychological horror, no gore" was requested is ... not great.

The Betrayal Knows My Name. There was only one interesting character and everyone else was either really boring or really unlikeable. It's a shame 'cause the story actually seemed interesting, but I just didn't care for the characters.

Which character did you think was interesting, out of curiosity?

I watched this a while back, and I think I found it pretty bland but mostly watchable. Overdid the angst a bit on all sides, but it was okay. I liked Takashiro and the twins, Tsukumo and Toko.

I do remember being amused by one of Yuki's early conversations with Kanata. Kid, if you talk to your friend who's moved away and ask him about an odd book he's reading, and he suddenly comes out with this calm, reasonable-sounding, apparently serious speech on how the world is sinful and needs to be cleansed, I think you should probably have more of a reaction that 'huh, that was a bit odd'. I would call that concerning, myself, if admittedly more in a 'my friend has joined a cult' than a 'demons will shortly start arriving' sort of way.

Oh damn, what was his name? Senshiro, I think. He had glasses and I remember really liking him for some reason.

Lol I remember that bit. It made me chuckle. I really wanted to like Yuki because I usually like characters with his personality type, but I just found him boring. The series as a whole has a lot of tropes I usually like, but it was just meh for me. I feel like high school me would've eaten it up with a spoon though.

Not really their fault, but I didn't know "doctor kink" in Reylo fic recs tended to be non-con. Non-con just doesn't butter my biscuits.
