What does "badass for the male gaze" even mean?

It means a woman whose fight scenes are only an excuse to show off her figure. It is a common theme in Whedon's works. It is trying to excuse softcore by pretending it is action girl feminism.

I think it means that instead of being a badass in a way that women can look up to, Wedon's WW is badass in way that men can get off to.

My guess? Tight clothing, cleavage, camera shots that pan slowly over boobs/butt/legs, etc. in a way that's not done with men during fight scenes.

Or in the case of WW, distracting the villain with a sexy dance. Can't remember the last time Batman had to do that, unless you count the Batusi!

It's when the badass female character's design is based primarily on being attractive straight guys.

It's written "sexy slow pan" up Diana's body in Whedon's script.

It's every video game where the female hero gets to wear armor that covers his vital areas, but the female hero is stuck wearing a chainmail bikini.

It's Lara Croft with her improbable breasts and impractical outfits.

It's every movie "tough chick" who wears black leather so tight that if they were actually in a fight, they wouldn't be able to move well enough to kick the bad guy in the jewels, much less the face.

It's River Tam. Just ... River Tam.
