i dont get it lol. if someone wants to write a power fantasy or whatever involving basically their self-insert, who does that harm and why is that automatically indicative of insecurity or narcissism? every story has characters that are essentially self-inserts or mouth-pieces of the author's. if you didn't know them on social media or something, you'd have no idea if it was supposed to represent them. authors can and should write about experiences that arent their own, or people who don't look like them, but it's not inherently selfish or narcissistic to want to write or draw something you can immediately relate to or have an interest in. if that's where their passion lies, what's the fucking problem?

this secret makes no indication about gender but i just want to point out the double-standard of how men have done this since the dawn of time and it's never been a federal issue, but when women do it... well i guess they're just dumb, self-absorbed bitches, yeah?

OP here, I don't mind self-inserts if the author owns it and plays it straight. It's pretty rare that they do though.

Of course any good writer injects a part of themselves into their characters but when it extends all the way to the drawings, down to every mole on their face, that's where I'll say they're balls deep in their comfort zone and I'm losing interest.

I agree. I find this secret incredibly petty. It's just another tiresome variation of "why can't fics cater to me?" Another reason to whine about those horrid "self insert" fics with some kind of judgment angle. Now the author has to be self revealing.

I really should write an OC fic with an OC that is nothing like me, or opposite of me, and watch heads explode.

And, yeah, the constant criticism of women's writing, gets real tiresome.
