Man, I remember when most of the popular ships in fandom were rivals and/or enemies, and even the "normal" ones were angsted up in fic. It was a little edgy but it worked for me.

I remember being into friendship pairings and feeling really outnumbered because everyone seemed to gravitate toward rival/enemy ones. But I still agree that it worked because it's not like most people cared that I wasn't into their ships. (Not saying fandom was a paradise then, but it wasn't... like this.)

DA

I like friendship pairings, too :).

And I'm like you in that I've never had people get mad at me for not being into their ships, either. Nor have I ever cared about what others ship, or how "problematic" it is or isn't. Just...how does that whole "this ship is/isn't problematic" mindset not get just plain exhausting after a while? I don't get it.

Is it just me, or are even the rivalships kind of downplayed now? Like I'm not really a fan of Klance, but I've clicked on a few fics that looked interesting and they all seemed to treat them like... best friends who occasionally tease each other, not rivals.

Eh, I mean, in the show itself (at least in season 2), they're just friends who mess with each other (see: the snowball fight). But you're right that fandom would usually exaggerate that and treat their "rivalry", as Lance insists, more seriously. Instead, they exaggerate the friendship aspect.

It's hard to put my finger on exactly what it is, it just sort of feels like fic very much erases the fact that they want to best each other? Like obviously they don't hate each other, but the actual canon seems to have a lot more tension and wanting to show off and fandom treats it a lot more like the relaxed sometimes teasing relationship between Pidge and Hunk.

Maybe it's just Back In My Day it was pretty standard to have a moment where one character realizes they've gone from wanting to rub the other character's face in their victory, to wanting to impress them. All of my admittedly small sample size has just gone ahead and started with both characters knowing they were flirting with the other.
